Bothell playing 'The Blue Way'
Posted by Mason Kelley
Before I get to the game itself, I would like to take a minute to update anyone who was at the game on the condition of Ballard freshman Matt Deehring.
Early in the fourth quarter, Deehring fell on the football. His midsection hit it so hard, it knocked the wind out of him. He was having trouble breathing and seemed to struggle to keep conscious. As a precautionary measure, Deehring was put on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance.
On the heels of Andrew Swank's death in Eastern Washington, the scene was frightening. Ballard coach John Bowers said Deehring is expected to be fine. I'll try to get an update on his condition tomorrow.
Now, as for the game, Bothell was extremely efficient on offense. On the first play of the game, Luke Proulx scored a 35-yard touchdown. The Cougars (5-0, 2-0 KingCo 4A Crown Division) then held the Beavers to a three-and-out and scored a second touchdown a few plays later.
Bothell's defense forced turnovers. The offense moved the ball well. The Cougars were able to take a comfortable lead and get a lot of players into the game.
Proulx rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown on six carries in the first half and quarterback Mitchell Muller completed five of his first six passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
Proulx took a screen pass from Muller 26 yards for a touchdown in the second half.
"We had a short week," Bothell coach Tom Bainter said. "We had a good week. It was good to get everybody in and play well. It's good to come away with a victory."
Bainter said the Cougars are becoming a very good practice team, which is helping them get off to strong starts. The coach seemed pleased that his club opened the game with the kind of focus they are going to need as the march to the playoffs moves on.
"We always talk about, no matter what the opponent or who they are, we play 'The Blue Way,'" Bainter said. "That's coming out with an intensity and a focus and an energy like you have every game. You can't change your emotion based on the game, because, when you do that, you're playing in a game with a good team and you'll be over your head."
