Final thoughts from Friday night
Posted by Mason Kelley
This was supposed to be the week the high-school football picture became a bit clearer. All of the high-profile games against nationally ranked opponents had faded away. It was Week 4 and, as the season draws closer to the midway point, this was the time where top teams were expected to hit full stride, making long and lengthy runs toward the postseason.
Bellevue was supposed to rout Mount Si.
Lakes was expected to cruise against Enumclaw.
Eastlake was going to send Redmond to its fourth loss.
However, after several upsets and a few games that were closer than expected, the snapshot of the 2009 season remains murkier than ever.
The Wolverines had the potential to put up 28 points in the first quarter, but they are still struggling with turnovers and penalties. Considering all of the shuffling they have done recently due to injuries these mental mistakes are easily explained away, but Mount Si is dealing with same issues and the Wildcats put up a fight.
Mount Si coach Charlie Kinnune said he had six players on crutches Friday night and, coming off a 50-28 loss to Interlake the week before, it would have been easy to expect an early blowout, but the Wildcats kept the game just close enough to keep things interesting.

When Lakes hit the top spot in the rankings this week, the first question was, will the Lancers be the third top-ranked 3A team to go down in three weeks? For many, that statement would be laughed off. After all, they were putting up more than 40 points per game.
Then, all of a sudden, Enumclaw came in and took a 14-7 lead at the half. Now, the Lancers put up 28 second-half points, but that was certainly an unexpected scare for two quarters.
After cruising to a 3-0 start, it didn't seem like No. 6-ranked Eastlake would have much trouble with Redmond. After all, the Mustangs started 0-3. Redmond led 14-13 at halftime and outscored the Wolves 10-8 in the fourth quarter.
That's a huge upset for the Mustangs and really throws a wrench into the rankings.
But that's not the only thing that muddled the mix in the top 10.
In 4A
No. 4 Southridge (Kennewick) fell to Wenatchee, 27-6.
No. 7 Olympia lost to South Kitsap, 10-6.
In 3A
No. 5 Glacier Peak couldn't get past Mountlake Terrace, 24-21.
No. 8 Camas fell to Skyview, 28-26.
And on Thursday No. 6 Mount Spokane lost to Ferris, 31-14.
Now that the upsets in the top 10 have been taken care of, here are some other top performers from Friday night.
Curtis 68, Decatur 28
Rahmel Dockery had 386 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.
Interlake 51, Mercer Island 45
Interlake's offense really puts up big numbers. The Saints had 624 yards total offense. Running back Brett Kirschner had 252 total yards four touchdowns. QB Matt Malos had 350 yards passing and three touchdowns. He also ran for 43 yards and a score.
Mercer Island QB Jeff Lindquist was 24 for 38 for 283 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Graham-Kapowsin 34, Spanaway Lake 18
Graham-Kapowsin's Jamaal Jones had 199 yards of total offense and three touchdowns.
Stadium 21, Foss 19
Stadium picked up its first regular-season win since 2005 Friday night. It is coach Jess Nelson's third season with the team. Stadium went 1-9 each of the last two years with the only victory coming in the last contest of the season, a non-conference crossover game.
"We've been close," Nelson said. "Year one was about bringing some belief, bringing some hope. Year two was about competing, and now the expectation has been that we're going to win."
King's 54, Lakewood 34
Quarterback Thomas Vincent completed 10 of 18 passes for 251 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 226 yards and two scores on 23 carries.
Meadowdale 38, Kamiak 28
