Mountlake Terrace no longer just a hoops haven
Posted by Darren Fessenden
Edmonds-Woodway and Mariner are both winless. Mountlake Terrace is undefeated.
What's up with the Wesco South this year?
In the case of the Warriors, they lost a bevy of talent (including Tony Heard, the leader of their offense and defense) and faced loaded Meadowdale in their opener and narrowly lost to solid Everett. The Marauders started the year at always-tough Lake Stevens and lost 28-21 last week to the host Hawks, who are 2-0 heading into Friday's showdown with Edmonds School District colleague Meadowdale.
For a program seeking its first winning season since the Reagan Administration, being undefeated in the final week of summer is a big deal -- especially when its at a school rich in basketball tradition (1977 state champions, third-place finish in 2005).
"I like to tell people I took over the Rutgers of high school football," said sixth-year Mountlake Terrace coach Tony Umayam.
And, for a team one year removed from having more sophomores than seniors, the future is considerably bright for the Hawks.
"Our line is mostly juniors, our receivers are juniors and our defense is half and half," Umayam said. "I'm pleased with the progress that we've made. It really started with last year's team. That's when we started turning the corner."
