High-school football officials to use blue penalty flags

Posted by Mason Kelley

If you are at a football game this weekend and you notice blue penalty flags instead of the traditional yellow flags, it is to raise awareness for a good cause.

For the second year high-school football officials are trading out the flags to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

It is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the flags will used during games today through Saturday.

"In most situations officials want to avoid attention during games, but for three days we are hoping to attract a little attention with every penalty that is called," said Todd Stordahl, the WOA commissioner. "By switching to blue flags it will at least make the fans notice that something is different. This is a great way for officials to participate in an activity that will help bring awareness to something that has had an impact on many lives, including some of those who are out on the field as officials."
