HBO Real Sports looks at the consequences of concussions
Posted by Mason Kelley
When HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel airs tonight at 10 p.m. PDT, the show's host is taking an in-depth look at head injuries and their consequences in high-school football. Over the past two years, eight kids have died and others have suffered debilitating injuries after returning too soon following a concussion.
The interviews include Zackery Lystedt and his parents, Victor and Mercedes. Lystedt played football at Tahoma Junior High and was also featured in a piece written by Tom Wyrwich last year. Click here to read the story. The show also talks about the legislation passed in Washington -- the Zackery Lystedt Law -- to address the issue of high-school football concussions.
I was given the privilege of watching the show yesterday and it is a powerful segment. I recommend anyone involved in high-school athletics take some time to watch the show or go back and read Wyrwich's piece.
The show will be on-demand from Sept. 21-Oct. 12 and will also be re-aired on HBO several times.
Update
In addition to the HBO Real Sports piece, there is more news regarding Lystedt. There is a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday to discuss a settlement in Lystedt's case. There will also be more information on the importance of the Zackery Lystedt Law. I will post a link to the story as soon as we get one.
