Friday morning standouts

Posted by Mason Kelley

Today we've got football, volleyball, soccer and even some swimming to mention.

Soccer

Kinslee Isaman scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Lake Stevens picked up its first win of the season, blanking Oak Harbor, 5-0.

Nicole Brunette had a hat trick and Elise Aylward scored twice and added an assist, helping Lindbergh shut out Foster, 9-0,

Shorecrest's Christina Jarvis scored three times in a 10-0 victory over Mariner, while Jessica Rankin and Brianne Lasconia each added two goals.

Now, I had to mention this game, because the score really stands out. Sumner blanked North Thurston, 16-0. That's a lot of offense.

Volleyball

Zoe Gogan had 21 kills during Mount Si's win over Mercer Island in five games.

Mariner's Katelyn Kelly finished with 32 digs, but the Marauders fell to Shorewood.

Kaci Jones had 24 kills, helping Stanwood defeat Arlington, 3-1.

Swimming

Marysville-Pilchuck freshman Hannah Taylor had an All-American consideration time (2:07.58) in the 200 IM, beating the second-place swimmer by almost 20 seconds. She added a state qualifying time in the 100 fly (59.80) and was a part of the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams, which also took first place.

Football

While it was disappointing that Tony Wroten missed last night's game, it was nice to check out a few games at Seattle Memorial Stadium.

Garfield played Inglemoor tough and Bulldogs coach Anthony Allen seemed pleased with the way his players performed. Vikings coach Frank Naish was also impressed with the Garfield.

Inglemoor won 28-14 and was able to control the clock. The major weakness I noticed in the Vikings' attack is their inability to hold onto the ball. There were too many fumbles, many coming while trying sell the fake on the option play. Naish said it's a point of emphasis moving forward.

The play of the game came from Garfield's Coleman Valentino. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound running back caught a pass out of the backfield and bulldozed his way for an 81-yard score. He broke tackles all the way down the field and, after the PAT, Garfield held a 7-6 lead.

In the late game at Memorial on Thursday, Skyline cruised to a 42-12 win over Ballard. The Spartans led 42-0 at the half and quarterback Jake Heaps completed 8 of 9 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns in limited action. He also rushed for a score.

But the guy I couldn't help but notice for the second week in a row was Cooper Pelluer. This kid is everywhere. He returned a fumble for a 20-yard score and seemed to be in the backfield on every play. He is adjusting nicely to his new home at defensive end.
