The Seattle Times preseason top 10

Posted by Tom Wyrwich

Only eight days remain until the first football games of the season, so this seemed like a great time to introduce the football rankings that will be included with our high-school preview next week.

But first, a little history. Can you remember the last time a KingCo 4A team did not play in the Class 4A state title game? You'd have to go back to 2002, and in between, there have been two years where two teams from the league met for the state championship, including last season (Skyline beat Issaquah).

So should not be a surprise, then, that the league dominates the preseason rankings. Skyline and Bothell are at the top, and there's much more than history behind that. Skyline has won 28 straight games and has one of the best quarterback-receiver tandems in the history of the state in Jake Heaps and Kasen Williams. Bothell has a pair of Washington-bound lineman leading the way for one of the deepest programs of the state.

But also expect a big year from Spokane, where Ferris and Gonzaga Prep lead a group of several teams that could contend for state tournament berths.

In Class 3A, defending champ Bellevue, winner of six of the last eight state titles, gets the top spot, followed last year's runner-up, Union, and a Lakes team that could be the most talented group of Lancers ever. That's saying a whole lot, not only about Lakes but also about the lofty expectations for Bellevue and Union this season (you can see both teams at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 19 in the CBA Football Classic).
