Northwest School's Maddie Meyers sets state indoor mile record
Posted by Mason Kelley
Northwest School's Maddie Meyers ran a 4:46.77 mile at the UW Last Chance Qualifier on March 6, setting the state indoor record in the mile.
Meyers, a sophomore, is defending Class 1A champion in the 1,600 and 3,200. According to coach Tim Brennan, Meyers has been competing unattached in indoor meets all winter.
Meyers' time was nine-second PR, which gave her the opportunity to compete in the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston last weekend where she placed fifth as the only sophomore in the field with a time of 4:51.
Back in December, in addition to winning her second straight state cross country title, Meyers placed 23rd in the Foot Locker cross country national championships in San Diego. She ran 5 kilometers in 18 minutes, 12 seconds and was 1:05 behind the winner.

Shorewood hires cross country coach
Posted by Mason Kelley
Shorewood High School announced Monday that Paul Villanueva is the school's new cross country coach.
Villanueva replaces Daniel Soler, who resigned earlier this month after two years as the Thunderbirds' head coach. Villanueva joins Miles Mason, who was hired this fall to coach the boys team.
This is Villanueva’s first head coaching assignment. Since being hired in 2001 as a math teacher at Shorewood, Villaueva has worked with several programs and currently serves as the assistant head track coach for the T-birds in addition to his role as the school's activities coordinator.
"We are excited to have someone with Paul’s credentials and coaching experience," Shorewood athletic director Don Dalziel said through a press release. "He is a man of character and is well respected in the Shorewood and Shoreline community. He has been successful as an assistant coach and is ready for his chance to be the head guy. We are looking forward to watching Paul grow as a coach and continue to build the Shorewood athletic program."

Jana Kohler to step down as Holy Names athletic director
Posted by Mason Kelley
After 13 years as the athletic director at Holy Names, Jana Kohler is stepping down at the end of the school year.
"It's bittersweet," Kohler said. "I love my job and I've been here for 13 years and I'm so proud of our programs."
Since taking over during the 1997-98 school year, Kohler has helped mold an athletic program that has won nine state championships, 13 district championships, 40 league titles and nine state academic championships. The Cougars wrapped up the winter season with a second-place finish at the 3A state girls basketball tournament over the weekend.
While Kohler said she will miss the people and the program, she wants to spend more time with her family and the long hours and numerous meetings were taking away from time she now plans to spend with her children.
"It's been really hard to do both jobs 100 percent and that's what's in me," Kohler said. "Being an athlete, you want to give your all to whatever you're doing. But when you're a mother and an athletic director, you can't do that and something has to give."

Bellevue hires Chris Beake as defensive coordinator
Posted by Mason Kelley
Bellevue football coach Butch Goncharoff confirmed Saturday that the Wolverines have hired Chris Beake to become the Wolverines' defensive coordinator.
"It's very exciting, because Bellevue is a national program," Beake said. "It's a great opportunity for me personally just to kind of come and do some things I've learned over my career on defense and implement them and run things myself."
Beake last worked as an assistant on offense and special teams for the Seahawks under Jim Mora. Prior to joining Seattle's coaching staff, he coached linebackers for the Falcons from 2004-06 and spent six seasons with the 49ers.
"I interviewed a lot of guys," Goncharoff said. "I just liked him. I liked him as a person. I think he gets it and he's not just all about football, it's about developing kids. There's just something about him that clicked with us."
Mora will also be a part of the staff, but his role has yet to be determined.
"Jim will be involved," Goncharoff said. "I don't know in what capacity yet. It's great. He's an outstanding guy in whatever capacity we get him, even if it's only for spring ball or summer. It's great to have him around. He's a great resource for us."
Beake replaces Wes Warren, who left to become the linebackers coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator at the University of Montana Western.
"We've definitely gone through some change," Goncharoff said. "There will be a lot of people changing spots. When you have success you definitely can become complacent. We want to change and continue to get better, so it's not negative, it's positive. It is nice to have it done."
Bellevue still has several coaching positions left to be filled.

3A girls basketball updates - Championship Sat.
Posted by Sandy Ringer
Here we go with the final four games of the season.
First we have three consolation contest. Everyone playing today is assured of a trophy.
I'll have brief recaps after each game (championship is so late, I'll see if Mason can post something while I'm working on my story).
Fifth-eighth places
Capital 59, East Valley (Spokane) 42
The Cougars (20-9) used a 15-3 second quarter to take control and claim the fifth-place hardware -- only the second state trophy in the program's history.
Tosha Hollingsworth capped an outstanding prep career with 21 points, hitting 8 of 13 shots from the field (including 4 of 7 threes). Kelsey Angels added 11 points, while Aria Goodman pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with six points. Kendel Wilkerson chipped in 10 points, while Alison Jensen had nine.
East Valley (11-19) picked up its first trophy (eighth place). Jenni White put together 16 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 assists. Kimmie Thatcher followed with 10 points.
Fourth-seventh places
Seattle Prep 75, Kennedy Catholic 60
Junior Kari Luttinen tied two tournament records and just missed the biggest one, the individual game scoring record of 42 set by Sheila Lambert from Chief Sealth back in 1998.
Luttinen finished with 40 points. She tied the individual-game and tournament marks for made free throws with 16 and 34, respectively. She had 20 attemptes against JFK and 45 for the tourney. Edy Jostol added 14 points, while Brittany McMillan piled up eight points, 16 rebounds and six assists.
Prep takes fourth and goes 19-10 on the season.
Kennedy (23-5) was a disappointing seventh after winning it all last year. The Lancers were without star Yaz Fuller for the first half while she re-took the SAT looking for a higher score.
Prep jumped up 22-8 late in the first quarter and led 38-28 at the half. Fuller's three to open the third made it 38-31, but Luttinen started a 16-0 run that put Prep back in control. Fuller finished with 13 points along with Presley Nuefeld, while Allie Madison had 15. Aminah Williams struggled offensively (3 of 16, 7 points), but had 10 boards and four steals.
Third-sixth places
Shadle Park 49, Mercer Island 36
The Highlanders (19-9) made 26 of 34 free throws to nail down the third-place trophy. Jenna Humphrey hit 10 of 12 at the line for most of her 14 points. Aleisha Hathaway also had 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Mercer Island (22-7), which takes sixth, ws led by Katherine Dapron with 10 points. The Islanders, who lost an emotional game in the semifinals against Cleveland on Friday after Thursday's comeback win over Kennedy, shot just 27.7 percent from the field, including a chilly 3 of 19 three-pointers.
Championship
Cleveland 47, Holy Names 44
Cleveland claimed its first state championship in girls basketball, knocking off top-ranked Holy Names.
Calah Scott came up big down the stretch, finishing with 10 points. Cheyenne Wilson scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Shacolby Jenkins had eight points and six rebounds for the Eagles.
Erika Johnson finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds for Holy Names, while Sophie Reichelt had eight points and seven rebounds.
