Trevaunté Williams figured it was time to take a deep breath and relax.

The transition from Foster High School to a new basketball program as storied as Garfield's hasn't been easy. But on Friday night he told himself to calm down and just play his game.

"I felt real relaxed," said Williams, a 6-foot-4 junior wing. "Earlier in the games, I've been thinking too much, but today it was like it was time to play like the Trevaunté Williams everybody knows of."

Williams took it a step further, scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as Garfield held on to beat Bothell 59-52 on the Bulldogs' court.

On a night when Gonzaga coach Mark Few was on hand to get a look at Bothell point guard Zach LaVine, Williams stole the show with a strong inside game and also pitched in with six steals.

"I didn't know that," Williams said. "See that's crazy. Everybody doesn't know who's in the crowd, so you've got to play your best every day."

The post-Tony Wroten era at Garfield has gone more smoothly with the addition of Williams. Coach Ed Haskins' group is a young team with many contributors who have led the Bulldogs to a 10-5 overall record and first place in the KingCo Crown Division at 8-2.

The inside-outside game of 6-5 junior wing Tucker Haymond, who scored eight points, and Williams has been difficult for teams to match up against.

"That's his best game of the year," Haskins said of Williams. "And it was a good time to do it. Trevaunté is a great kid. We're fortunate that they moved over here. He's a great kid and a heck of a ballplayer. He's a matchup problem."

LaVine, a junior, appeared out of sync and was limping on occasion. Yet he scored 20 points to rally Bothell (9-6, 5-5) from a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit.

Garfield had gone on a 21-3 run to finish the third quarter and take a commanding 45-29 lead. But Bothell, which had won four of its past five games by one point, three of them on LaVine game-winners, looked like it might continue that trend.

Perrion Callandret, another guard getting Division I recruiting attention, sank a jumper to cut Garfield's lead to 55-52 with 16.5 seconds remaining. But Williams coolly sank all four of his free throws down the stretch to help Garfield snap a two-game losing skid.

"A new thing me and my coach have been talking about is definitely in the new year — 20-12 — so that's something I've really been focusing on: 20 points, 12 rebounds. So I make that my new goal."

On Friday night, he outdid himself with a 30-12.

"That's nice," he said. "It feels good. I reached the goal and exceeded it."
