How the Star Times teams are selected

Star Times all-area teams are chosen after the regular season by Seattle Times reporters, freelancers and editors. Selections must be from schools in King and Snohomish counties, or in Metro and WesCo.

Glenn Paden

Shorecrest, F, Sr.

Four-year starter, committed to Oregon State, made things click for Scots with 21 goals and 16 assists in regular season. Paden had 74 goals in his prep career.

Ugo "Sean" Okoli

Beamer, F, Sr.

Wake Forest-bound talent helped Titans to an unbeaten regular season and No. 1 state ranking. Tallied 24 goals and 14 assists with three hat tricks. Four-year starter is part of U-18 national team pool.

Guy Shively

Jackson, F, Sr.

Haitian-born player returned to play for Timberwolves after skipping sophomore and junior seasons. Moved from defender to forward for his senior year and produced 19 goals and five assists in regular season.

Trevor Bartels

King's, F, Sr.

Two-time Offensive Player of Year in Cascade Conference is big target at 6 feet 1. Seattle University signee had 25 goals and four assists to help Knights go 18-2 heading into state playoffs.

Aaron Kovar

Garfield, MF, Jr.

State's Gatorade Player of Year is a dynamic playmaker. Had 14 goals, 19 assists going into state playoffs. Named to U-18 national team pool and scored a goal in a game against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Troy Peterson

Beamer, MF, Sr.

Versatile Peterson was four-year starter and ranked 75th player in nation in Class of 2011 by www.topdrawersoccer.com. Had 17 goals, 15 assists going into playoffs. Has scholarship to play for College of Charleston.

Chase Hanson

Jefferson, MF, Sr.

Four-year starter and SPSL North MVP had 11 goals, 12 assists this season. Three-time All-SPSL pick likely to play college soccer for Division II Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla.

Nick Rooney

Sammamish, D, Sr.

Dartmouth-bound player patrolled back line and also scored four goals in regular season for Totems, who won KingCo 3A/2A title and reached state quarterfinals. Smart player has 3.8 grade-point average.

DeAndre Yedlin

O'Dea, D, Sr.

A top outside back for Seattle Sounders FC Academy, Yedlin has signed to play for Akron. Ranked No. 7 nationally in Class of 2011 by www.topdrawersoccer.com. Had three goals and nine assists.

Michael Gallagher

Eastlake, D, Jr.

Big-time center back keys Wolves' defense, which ended the regular season with a 691-minute shutout streak. Gallagher's leadership has helped Wolves go 12-3-2 on way to state semifinals.

Andrew Weakly

Glacier Peak, GK, Sr.

Villanova-bound keeper registered nine shutouts in regular season to help top-ranked Grizzlies (20-1) reach 3A state semifinals. Has 0.87 goals-against average, and recorded two assists off long punts.

Coach

Brett Norton, Jackson

Timberwolves have improved steadily under the fifth-year coach. They were 10-8 last season and had five wins in Norton's first season, 2007. Jackson outscored regular-season opponents 53-12 and finished 16-3 after losing in shootout to Kentwood in quarterfinals. One lineup tweak that provided dividends was moving Shively, who plays defender in club soccer, to forward.

Baseball

Brian McAfee

Bothell, P, Sr.

McAfee had an 8-0 record heading into Class 4A state playoffs. Struck out 74 hitters in 62 innings and, in addition to posting a 0.56 ERA, had a streak of 46 scoreless innings.

Blake Snell

Shorewood, P, Sr.

Hard-throwing left-hander needed just 49 innings to strike out 103 batters. Struck out 19 in one game, a 2-0 victory over Oak Harbor on April 12. Going into the 3A state playoffs, was 7-0 with a 1.14 ERA for second-ranked Thunderbirds.

Zach Abbruzza

Redmond, Utility, Sr.

Versatile senior has played first base, third and catcher and has pitched for Mustangs, helping them reach the 4A state semifinals. Through 25 games, was hitting .447 with 35 RBI, eight home runs. Has a 0.75 ERA and threw six scoreless innings in a winner-to-state game.

Kyle Olson

Jackson, C, Sr.

The leader behind the plate for Jackson's pitching staff, Olson is also the leadoff hitter for the state's top-ranked 4A team. Was batting .507 with six home runs, three triples, nine doubles and 38 runs heading into state.

Trevor Mitsui

Shorewood, IF, Sr.

One of the most feared hitters in the state, Mitsui has an impressive .708 batting average. He is consistent and has dominant power numbers with 11 home runs, seven doubles and 24 RBI through 23 games.

Eric Koenig

Enumclaw, IF, Sr.

Enumclaw coach Eric Fiedler said he had never seen anything like it after Koenig hit eight home runs in a six-game stretch. Through 21 games, Koenig was hitting .511 with nine home runs, 24 RBI.

Jamie Hall

Seattle Prep, IF, Sr.

Hall will play golf for Hawaii in college, but the senior made the most of his last baseball season, hitting .578 with 10 doubles, six home runs, 25 RBI and 22 runs through 21 games.

Austin Jones

Edmonds-Woodway, IF, Sr.

Jones spent time at first base and catcher and was one of the top hitters in WesCo, batting .597 with seven home runs, 13 doubles and 37 RBI through 23 games. Was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in the district championship game.

Max Brown

Mount Si, OF, Sr.

Wildcats' center fielder helped them claim the KingCo 3A/2A championship, hitting .508 with 24 stolen bases, 27 runs and 20 RBI through 21 games. Also hit eight doubles and three home runs.

Jonny Locher

Highline, OF, Jr.

A true switch-hitter and the only junior on the Star Times team, Locher is receiving serious recruiting attention. Batted .613 this season with 13 doubles, four home runs, 36 runs. Was 25 for 26 in stolen-base attempts.

Keenan Forch

O'Dea, OF, Sr.

A key contributor on O'Dea's back-to-back state title teams, Forch is having another strong season. Going into state, was hitting .486 with seven doubles, 22 RBI despite playing through a knee injury for half the season.

Coach

Russ Hayden, Tahoma

In 19 years as coach at Tahoma, Hayden has a 261-149 record (20-3 in 2011). Second-ranked Bears have qualified for the state regionals eight times under Hayden, including 2006, '07, '08, '09 and '11.

Softball

Madi Schreyer

Woodinville, P, So.

Schreyer, who has already committed to Stanford, finished the regular season 10-0 with a 0.38 ERA, averaging 10 strikeouts per game. Also a feared power hitter. Her .707 slugging percentage included four home runs.

Riley Fritz

Marysville-Pilchuck, P, Sr.

Fritz led 20-2 Tomahawks to state, playing third base when not pitching. Was 10-1 with a 1.45 ERA during regular season. Batted .500 with a .758 slugging percentage and 24 RBI.

Katie Engelbrecht

Woodinville, C, Sr.

A repeat Star Times selection, Engelbrecht picked off nine runners during regular season. She hits for power (.681 slugging percentage) and went into playoffs with 21 RBI. Committed to Boise State.

Hannah Melick

Auburn Riverside, IF, Sr.

Melick, a shortstop who has signed with Oregon, led SPSL North with a .640 average and 27 RBI in 16 games. Also was league leader in on-base percentage (.705) and slugging percentage (1.320), hammering six doubles, five triples and six home runs. Voted division's player of year.

Kelsey Parker

Lynnwood, IF, Sr.

Parker hit safely in 17 of Royals' first 20 games, with 14 multi-hit efforts and 18 extra-base jolts, including 10 doubles and seven home runs. Had 41 RBI and was nearly flawless at shortstop. Headed to Wagner College in New York.

Lindsay Robison

Jackson, IF, Sr.

Robison batted .571 with 40 RBI in regular season. Of her 33 hits, 24 went for extra bases, including 17 doubles and five homers. In addition to playing third base, also pitches for Timberwolves. Signed to play for BYU-Hawaii.

Natalie Gellos

Holy Names, IF, Sr.

Gellos catches and plays first base for state's top-ranked 3A team. A former baseball player who didn't take up softball until her freshman year, she was batting .547 through the Metro League tournament, with 14 extra-base hits and 26 RBI. Signed with Pace University (N.Y.).

Erin Crowley

Kentlake, OF, Sr.

Two-time Star Times selection is career .531 hitter who has scored 100 runs and helped key Kentlake's return to 4A state tournament. Outstanding defensive player is a game changer. Headed to Seattle University.

Alexa Faist

Juanita, OF, Sr.

Known for her spectacular catches, strong arm and potent bat, Faist led Rebels to KingCo 3A/2A and Sea-King District championships. Batted .569 during regular season with .741 slugging percentage and 10 steals in 11 attempts.

Clara Dunn

Bainbridge, OF, Sr.

Four-year starter helped Spartans win 3A state title in 2009 and finish second in 2010. Batting .513 with 16 extra-base hits, 29 RBI and .885 slugging percentage. Bainbridge's only full-time player who has not committed an error.

Amber "Bubba" Morrow

Auburn, Utility, Sr.

Morrow played infield, outfield and catcher, committing just two errors. But her bat makes the Seattle University recruit special. Her 33 hits included seven doubles, four triples and nine home runs for a 1.415 slugging percentage. Was 17 for 17 on stolen-base attempts.

Coach

Kyle Peacocke, Everett

Peacocke has built Everett into a perennial softball power in 12 seasons as coach. Surpassed 200 career wins this season (214-88) and has guided fifth-ranked Seagulls (20-3) to an eighth state appearance.
