The last time Gonzaga Prep played in the state semifinals, current senior Parker Kelly's father, Terry, was a senior standout for the Bullpups.

It was 1976 and Terry led the state in scoring, averaging 26.2 points. The Bullpups lost to Cleveland, the defending state champions, whose roster included current O'Dea assistant Carl Ervin. The Eagles went on to win again. Gonzaga Prep finished third.

This year, facing the same situation, the younger Kelly helped Gonzaga Prep advance one step farther after the Bullpups' 66-53 upset win over top-ranked Garfield Friday night at the Tacoma Dome.

"To me, it's a great accomplishment," Parker said. "My dad obviously had a very good team and it's just great for a great group of guys like us to make it this far. I think we deserve it. We put in the time for it."

Like his father, Parker is a Bullpups leader, hitting big shots in crucial situations.

"We're both very proud of each other," said Parker, a senior.

Terry went on to start 80 straight games at Washington State, leading the Cougars to the 1980 NCAA tournament.

When asked if Terry had any pregame advice for his son, Parker said, " 'Just soak it in and enjoy it. Have fun.'

"It's a great opportunity. This is my third time being here. I know what it's like. When I come here, I'm very prepared."

Kingma sets WesCo record

It was fitting Jackson's Brett Kingma hit a three-pointer to cement his place as WesCo's all-time leading scorer.

However, it's going to take some time before the Oregon-bound senior can enjoy passing Snohomish product Jon Brockman.

After last year's surprise run to the Class 4A title game, Kingma walked off the floor after Friday's consolation-round loss to Olympia still trying to process what happened.

"It's just disappointing that we kind of came here and didn't show any pride at all," said Kingma, who has 2,035 career points after scoring 24 against Olympia. "I just think we weren't focused. I think we were just happy to be here."

The frustration of the past two days won't subside right away.

"It would have been nice to go out with a trophy but, for now, it stings a little bit," Kingma said. "We put Jackson on the map, proved we were one of the best programs in the state."

Note

Kentridge has the 4A tournament record for three-pointers with a four-game total of 47. The Chargers set the record Thursday and added 12 more Friday. The previous record was 33, by Sehome in 1996. Kentridge also holds the record for attempts (99).
