Issaquah tops Newport in KingCo 4A volleyball final

BOTHELL — With Newport threatening to steal the second game of Thursday night's KingCo 4A tournament title match, Issaquah senior Rachel Roeder thought about a season's worth of grueling volleyball practices.

She also thought about how coach Todd Parsons reminds his players of the need to be warriors on the floor. With those things in mind and with plenty of help from fellow senior Sarah Hanna, the Eagles won the game and went on to take the match, 25-18, 25-19, 25-15.

"When we're down we have to take the team on our backs," said Roeder, the KingCo MVP who finished with 21 kills. "Sarah really stepped up and took it upon herself with serving that she was just going to go after it. I always try to put it away for the team."

Both teams advance to next week's state tournament in Kennewick. In an earlier match, Woodinville beat Garfield 25-22, 25-21, 27-25 in a loser-out matchup. The Falcons will host the No. 3 WesCo team at 2 p.m. Saturday for a state trip.

After winning the first game, Issaquah quit communicating, gave up the first six points of Game 2 and later trailed 16-10. Then Hanna and Roeder took over. They helped the Eagles score the next 13 points, the run punctuated by a Roeder kill.

"Sarah went back there and just kept firing that serve tough and it was in every time," Parsons said. "Rachel just took care of the rest."

Because his team already has a spot at state, Newport coach Steve Trachy said the loss was a good chance to assess things his team needs to improve.

"Issaquah is a really good team," he said. "It gives us a good chance to see what we need to work on. Areas that are not our strength right now, we'll continue to work at it."
