Lindbergh flattens Rainier Beach, 46-0

Diondre Toms jetted for a 47-yard TD on a reverse and Calebse Cange returned an interception 45 yards for a score to get the Eagles started.

RENTON — The confidence took hold the minute the Lindbergh football team first touched the ball.

It seemed at that point, the damage was done.

Confidence strutters Diondre Toms and Calebse Cange provided the big plays in the first half as Lindbergh showed it's back and ready for more success by belting Rainier Beach 46-0 in Friday's nonleague opener at Renton Stadium.

Toms, a wide receiver, jetted for a 47-yard touchdown run on a reverse and Cange returned an interception 45 yards for a score as the rout was on in the first half. Early in the fourth quarter, Cange returned a Beach kickoff — a free-kick punt after a Vikings safety — 65 yards for a touchdown.

"All in all not a bad performance for Week 1," said Lindbergh coach Pat O'Grady, whose team is coming off a school-best 10-2 season in 2009.

"We had some mental mistakes we have to clean up. We were sloppy at times and we lost our focus, but we'll be OK."

Lindbergh won easily despite a subpar showing from sophomore quarterback Matt Stuart, who started all but the Eagles' opener last season as a freshman. Stuart completed 6 of 16 passes for 59 yards and one TD.

Toms had 46 yards on five catches, and an interception.

"We wanted to start it out pounding the rock," said Toms.

"We knew we could pass, because we have a good quarterback in Stuart.

We wanted to make a statement out here, because we lost a lot of players from last year."

Eagles senior running back Bakari Davis churned out 94 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. Lindbergh amassed 143 yards rushing despite 80 yards on 11 penalties.

Rainier Beach, picked to finish second by coaches in the Metro League's Sound Division, never found a groove. The Vikings committed 15 penalties for 129 yards and were intercepted three times.

In addition to Cange and Toms' picks, Cameron Callen picked off a pass for the Eagles, who outgained Beach 202 to 152 yards in total offense.

"We've got some real playmakers, some real good skill kids," said O'Grady, who lost five starters on defense and six on offense. "We've just got to shore up the offensive line and sharpen some things up."
