Help arrives too late for Overlake | Prep boys soccer

Two Overlake players made a mad dash from Yakima to Sumner to help their soccer team, but the Owls fell 3-0 to Wahluke in the title match.

SUMNER — It fell short of a storybook ending, but Trevor Partington and Marcus Munoz of Overlake still have a good story to tell.

The Owls of Redmond fell to Wahluke 3-0 Saturday in the Class 1A boys soccer state championship game at Sunset Chev Stadium. But Partington and Munoz gave the team a big surge of energy when they sprinted into the stadium carrying duffels with 19 minutes left in the match.

A few hours earlier, the pair placed sixth in the state tennis doubles championships in Yakima. When they finished there, they dashed to a waiting getaway car driven by Munoz's father and headed for Sumner. Their goal: Play in two state tournaments in two sports on the same day.

"We changed in the car," said Munoz. "These are our tennis shorts."

Partington, a senior midfielder, is a soccer captain; Munoz is a high-energy junior defender.

"Trevor is so dominant in the center of the field," said coach Bob Bristol. "Not having the two of them put a lot of pressure on our defense."

Overlake (20-1-1) plays regular-season boys soccer in the fall. The team reconvened for its first spring match less than three weeks ago. Of its 22 players, 16 play other spring sports.

After winning a 9 a.m. tennis match Saturday, Partington and Munoz lost the first set of their next match (which the tournament director allowed to start 45 minutes early) to determine fourth or sixth place.

"It was especially confusing then," Partington said. "We knew if we were going to win that match, we'd have to play two more sets (in the best-of-three format). We knew it was one or the other at that point.

"We won the second, and it was a close one in the third."

Said Munoz of the drive from Yakima to Sumner: "We were doing the speed limit, but it was stressful getting updates in text messages. Hearing about the first goal made us nervous; learning about the second goal was pretty tough."

The Owls trailed 2-0 when Bristol put them in the game with 15 minutes to play. Munoz assisted on an apparent goal by Hakan Yagiz in the 71st minute, but the score was waived off because moments earlier Wahluke was cited for a hand ball.

"We pushed as hard as we could to get here," Munoz said. "Playing on one state tournament is good enough; two in the same day is pretty amazing."

Arnulfo Leon scored in the 31st and 79th minutes for Wahluke (20-2), located in Mattawa, between Yakima and Moses Lake. Eugenio Cruz drove in a score from 20 yards out in the 50th minute.

"They're a solid team," Bristol said. "I have no complaints. The speed of that game challenged us. We realize missing the kids who we were missing did make a difference. But I'm proud of what we did. We were fighting to the last moment even though we were down. We never quit."

Other 1A game

Cashmere 2, King's 1 (3rd-4th)

Pedro Evans' second goal, in the 67th minute, snapped a 1-1 tie as the Bulldogs (18-3) claimed third place. Evans put Cashmere ahead 1-0 in the first half and Trevor Bartels tied it with a goal for King's (16-5) in the 51st minute.

Class 2A

Bellingham 1, Cheney 0 (1st-2nd)

Tristan Bosman scored 13 minutes into the second half, breaking a scoreless tie as the Red Raiders won in their first appearance in the championship game. The victory gave Bellingham schools three consecutive 2A titles, after Sehome won in 2008 and Squalicum in 2009. Cheney finished runner-up for the third consecutive year.

Sehome 1, Toppenish 0, shootout (3rd-4th)

The Mariners outscored the Wildcats 2-1 in the shootout to secure third place. Sehome outshot Toppenish 18-10.
