WIAA/Seattle Times state athletes of the week

WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week for Jan. 3-9.

Class 4A

Eddie Young, Shorewood diving: Young, a sophomore, broke a pair of 13-year-old pool records with a six-dive score of 291.55 and an 11-dive, state-qualifying score of 437.85.

Taylor Stern, Ballard gymnastics: Stern, a junior, won the vault (9.3), bars (9.15) and floor exercise (9.65) while winning the all-around with a season-high 37.15 at the 14-team Washington Open Winter Invitational. She also won three events and the all-around in a dual meet against Roosevelt.

Class 3A

John Wojtech, Olympic swimming: Wojtech broke school records while winning the 50-yard freestyle (22.36 seconds) and 500 free (4:54.06), and swam on two winning relays in a dual-meet victory over Sequim.

Liza Ambrose, Olympic bowling: Ambrose bowled games of 224 and 193, helping the Trojans to a team series of 999 in a girls victory.

Class 2A

Ren Bishop, Squalicum wrestling: Bishop, a junior, pinned last year's 1A state champion, Sam Chapman of Vashon, in the 112-pound final at the Everett Classic. Bishop led 7-2 when he got the pin at 5:23.

Chelsea Haskey, Black Hills basketball: Haskey averaged nearly 27 points, 14 rebounds and four steals in games against Enumclaw, Franklin and River Ridge. She shot nearly 81 percent.

Class 1A

Lexi Petersen, Seattle Christian basketball: Petersen, a junior, scored 22 and 20 points in victories over Charles Wright and Vashon.

No boys nominated.

Class 2B

Grant Schulz, Reardan basketball: Schulz averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks in wins over Sprague-Harrington and Colfax.

No girls nominated.

Class 1B

No boys or girls nominated.

The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state.
