FEDERAL WAY — Skyline's girls soccer team survived the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs without scoring a goal Wednesday.

The seventh-ranked Spartans of Sammamish didn't wait long to score Saturday.

With a goal in the third minute and a game-saving assist from the goal post in the second half, the defending state champions shut out No. 12 Beamer 1-0 in a state quarterfinal at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Skyline (16-4) will play ninth-ranked Kentwood (16-0-4) in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m. at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood. The Titans of Federal Way, who missed state last year after finishing second in 2007, end the season with a 13-4-3 record.

The Spartans jumped out to the early lead when senior Anna Morgan played a beautiful cross into the penalty box to midfielder Coral Anderson, who headed the ball into the corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

"I didn't know where it went at first, but then I saw out of the corner of my eye it went in and I got really excited," said Anderson, a senior captain.

Skyline coach Don Braman praised the efforts of both Morgan and Anderson on the goal.

"You saw something there of two kids who really wanted it and both stepped up, and that was really important for our team," Braman said. "The game plays out different if you don't get that early goal."

Morgan, who has a team-high 12 assists, said she embraces the role of a playmaker, especially with so many targets to pass to.

"There's always someone there," said Morgan. "They make it easy for me."

The Titans came inches away from tying the score in the 46th minute, when senior midfielder Holland Crook fired a 27-yard free kick past the diving Skyline keeper, but was denied by the post.

"Oh man, that was so close," said Beamer coach Joel Lindberg. "She's great at those [free kicks]."

Jill Stika and Tina Vargas combined for Skyline's ninth shutout of the season.

"I can't be happier with my goalkeeping and the defensive work that was invested," said Braman, whose team clinched a top-four finish for the fifth time in program history.
