KENNEWICK — The Seattle Prep volleyball team saw its 11-match win streak come to an end Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state tournament at Toyota Center.
The Panthers won the first set agaijnst Greater St. Helens League champion Prairie before defensive problems set in, costing them in a 15-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 defeat.
"We went away from what we do best," said Prep coach Katie Wilson. "We pass the ball well and serve well, but we didn't do that tonight."
Seattle Prep, which captured the Metro League tournament and Sea-King District titles during their win streak, will play Capital of Olympia in a loser-out match at 3:30 p.m. today. The winner will play for fourth and seventh places later in the evening.
"We need to worry about our side of the net," Wilson said.
Capital lost to Eastern Regional champion Mount Spokane 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-11 in the first quarterfinal of the day.
Bishop Blanchet also reached the semifinals, beating Meadowdale 25-21, 27-29, 25-16, 25-20.
In the final quarterfinal match, Mount Si beat Camas in five games.
Archbishop Murphy
advances to 2A semis
Archbishop Murphy reached the semifinals for the first time in school history and will play Fife today for a spot in the Class 2A championship match.
The Wildcats rolled past Grandview 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 in their opener, avenging a first-round loss to the Greyhounds a year ago, then defeated West Valley (Spokane) 16-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18 in the quarterfinals.
"We're so excited," said senior middle hitter Savannah Fletcher, who had 25 kills for the day. "Coach [Jeff Curtis] told us, 'If you just play, you'll win.' We stepped it up in that second match and showed what we're made of."
