BELLEVUE — Mount Si coach Charlie Kinnune spoke this week of the importance of limiting Bellevue's big plays.
The Wolverines wasted little time spoiling that game plan.
Bellevue's Sean Coley scored on a 64-yard run on the opening play from scrimmage and the top-ranked Wolverines cruised to a 49-17 win in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday night at Bellevue Memorial Stadium.
Bellevue (9-2) will play at the winner of today's game between Glacier Peak and Timberline next Friday or Saturday.
"We made some big plays," Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff said. "A lot of guys touched the ball and a lot of guys had success."
Bellevue won 28-14 in the first meeting between the KingCo teams in September, thanks in part to a 78-yard touchdown pass and a 34-yard TD run.
It was more of the same for Bellevue Friday night. Joe Joe Conner ran 50 yards with a screen pass to set up Joey Mangialardi's 1-yard touchdown run on the Wolverines' second possession.
Bellevue then got a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by Coley, and Mangialardi added his second scoring run. Mount Si (6-5) ran all of seven plays on offense before Bellevue took a 28-0 lead.
"We couldn't stop their big play," Kinnune said. "We struggled defending them. Most people will."
Mangialardi added his third touchdown in the second quarter on a 45-yard run. He finished with 80 yards on eight carries, all in the first half.
"That was the best first half we've had all year," Mangialardi said.
Bellevue intercepted three Mount Si passes and forced a fumble. It was the ninth time this season that the Wolverines' defense limited an opponent to 17 or fewer points.
Bellevue's two losses this season were to out-of-state opponents, Katy (Texas) and Grant (Sacramento, Calif.).
"I can't believe that there is anyone in this league that can beat them right now," Kinnune said. "I've been around a long time, and that's a pretty good team."
