Prep Volleyball | Mount Si picks up big win at districts
Facing a tough opponent in a tough district tournament, the Mount Si volleyball team showed some toughness of its own by defeating fifth-ranked Eastside Catholic 3-1 Thursday night in a Sea-King 3A District second-round match at West Seattle High School.

Facing a tough opponent in a tough district tournament, the Mount Si volleyball team showed some toughness of its own by defeating fifth-ranked Eastside Catholic 3-1 Thursday night in a Sea-King 3A District second-round match at West Seattle High School.
"We probably have the best district in the state for 3A," said Mount Si coach Bonnie Foote. "It's going to be hard getting out of our district to get to state. But if we can keep improving, I like our chances."
The Wildcats (15-2), who won 25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, used a 7-0 burst early in the fourth set to take a 13-6 lead. Eastside Catholic, playing without three starters, rallied to narrow the deficit to 23-22 before Shelagh Macaulay finished the match with back-to-back kills.
"It was definitely a big win tonight," said Macaulay, who joined fellow outside hitter Zoe Gogan with 16 kills and double-digit digs. "You've got to beat the best to be the best. You have to play teams like this eventually, and our team really played together tonight."
Mount Si, the No. 2 seed from KingCo 3A, advances to a district semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sammamish High School against second-ranked Seattle Prep, the Metro League's No. 1 seed. The Panthers (15-4) cruised past Nathan Hale 25-13, 25-10, 25-17.
Seattle Prep was paced by 6-foot-2 junior Gabby Bird-Vogel, who logged 13 kills, nine digs and four aces.
"They played with composure the entire time," said Prep coach Katie Wilson, whose team was missing two starters with knee injuries. "We put a lineup in there that hadn't played together before and they played like a team."
Eastside Catholic and Nathan Hale play a consolation-bracket match at 1 p.m. Saturday, hoping to qualify for one of the district's four state berths.
