ISSAQUAH — Liberty tried to turn the lights out on Bellevue, literally and metaphorically.
Not only did a problem with the stadium lights cause a 20-minute blackout that delayed the game, but the Patriots came out strong and looked to put an end to the Wolverines' stranglehold on the KingCo 3A/2A Conference championship.
But Bellevue, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 3A, battled back and claimed a 27-21 victory over the No. 3-ranked Patriots on Friday night.
Liberty (7-1 overall, 4-1 league) took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards. Quarterback Trey Wheeler completed 5 of 6 passes for 65 yards on the drive, including an 11-yard touchdown strike to Jake Bainton.
Bellevue answered quickly. Joe Joe Connor scored on a 10-yard run to tie the game in the second quarter, and Will Fields returned a fumble 50 yards to give the Wolverines (6-2, 5-0) the lead.
Race Sciabica kicked a 42-yard field goal to give Bellevue a 17-7 lead at the half.
The Patriots rallied in the second half and had one final chance to drive the length of the field and tie or win the game with 3:06 to play, but Bellevue linebacker John Kanongata'a intercepted a pass that allowed the Wolverines to run out the clock.
