FEDERAL WAY — This was a different Federal Way football team Friday night.
There was no struggling on offense and no chance the Eagles would start South Puget Sound League (SPSL) 4A play winless in three games.
Trenton Pinson, the state 4A runner-up in the 100 and 200 meters in track last spring, got the Eagles off to a fast start with a 55-yard touchdown run and the defense did the rest in a shocking 49-14 drubbing of Kentlake in a North Division game at Federal Way Stadium.
Federal Way (1-2 league, 2-2 overall) started clicking offensively from the start and outgained Kentlake (2-2, 2-2) 422 yards to 200. The Falcons were looking for their third win in a row.
"We knew coming in we controlled our own destiny," said Pinson, who ran 11 times for 118 yards and scored twice. "Losing big games like we did early in the season, we had everyone wondering where we were going.
"Our goal was to dominate and obliterate."
Quarterback Nick Tanielu was particularly sharp, completing 12 of 19 passes for 218 yards. He threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score.
The Eagles scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, taking a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
"This was a big difference execution-wise from previous weeks," said Federal Way coach Joe Meagher, whose defense registered five sacks. "We made a huge step forward."
Pinson burst up the middle and cut to the right sideline and ran away for his 55-yard touchdown run just 1:42 into the game.
"When he gets in the open, no one is going to catch him, because he's the fastest kid in the state," said Meagher. "The trick is getting him in the open."

At Lakes 35, Enumclaw 14
The top-ranked Lancers survived a scare against the unranked Hornets, overcoming a 14-7 halftime deficit. Enumclaw (3-1, 2-1) led at halftime on two 36-yard scoring passes from Terenn Houk to Riley Carel.
Lakes (4-0, 3-0) tied the score with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter on Willis Wilson's 13-yard run, his second score of the game. Two minutes later, John Goldwire returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown to give the Lancers the lead.
Lakes scored twice more in the fourth quarter to pull away. Wilson rushed for 122 yards on 17 carries.
