EDMONDS — Nobody bothered to give Kamiak coach Dan Mack the memo before his team's matchup with Meadowdale that said his Knights couldn't hang with the state's 10th-ranked Class 3A team.

Perhaps that's why Mack was visibly shaken after the Class 4A Knights' 38-28 loss at Edmonds Stadium Friday night.

"I wasn't pleased with our performance tonight," said Mack. "I thought Meadowdale did a nice job. [Meadowdale coach] Mark Stewart does a terrific job with his team. He has a nice team this year, and a great back."

That back is senior Naji Moore-Taylor, and he rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Meadowdale quarterback Danny McDonald rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown.

"They did a lot to stop us, and we did a lot to stop ourselves," said Stewart, whose team awaits fifth-ranked Glacier Peak in both teams' WesCo 3A opener next week. "It wasn't our best game. But we did enough to get it done."

Senior quarterback Jake Sortor accounted for all of Kamiak's touchdowns, two rushing and two passing, and had 180 total yards.

Moore-Taylor's 56-yard scamper down the left sideline on the game's first play from scrimmage set up Connor Hamlett's 8-yard touchdown reception from McDonald. Moore-Taylor ran 4 yards for his first TD late in the first quarter to put the Mavericks up 14-0.

Meadowdale (4-0) clung to a 17-14 halftime lead despite Sortor's 8-yard touchdown pass to Josh Glenn and a 2-yard TD run.

Moore-Taylor scored again from 1 yard on the second play of the second half, following a Kamiak fumble, giving the Mavericks a 24-14 lead.

"If we don't turn the ball over at the beginning of the second half and [instead] come down and score, it's a different game," Mack said.

Following an interception of Sortor, Meadowdale moved 25 yards in four plays — all Moore-Taylor carries — and scored on his 1-yard run with 3 ½ minutes left in the third quarter.

Kamiak (2-2) marched 72 yards in 17 plays, capped by Sortor's 1-yard keeper, to make it 31-21 in the fourth quarter. But Meadowdale answered with a drive resulting in McDonald's brilliant 33-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds to go.
