EDMONDS — They play fast and relentless, with a creativity that flows on each play from their no-huddle offense. The Meadowdale Mavericks seem to have it all: a quarterback with a knack for inventing plays under pressure, a running back who turns corners like a BMW and a line that opens lanes wider than I-5.
No one has stopped them yet. Through three weeks, the Class 3A Lynnwood school has run all over three WesCo 4A teams — and three good ones, at that.
Friday night, the Mavericks put a quick death to Mountlake Terrace's unbeaten start with a 49-7 victory at Edmonds Stadium.
"It's a good start for us," said Meadowdale coach Mark Stewart, who later added, "We've got guys that are going to make plays."
A year ago, on the same field, Mountlake Terrace shocked the Mavericks with a 23-17 overtime victory. But by halftime, the Mavericks (3-0) had put any hope of a repeat upset to rest.
With running back Naji Moore-Taylor — who missed last year's game — rushing for two of his three touchdowns in the final 2 ½ minutes of the first half, Meadowdale took a 28-0 lead into the locker room. At that point, Meadowdale had gained 203 yards to Mountlake Terrace's 36.
"We spread the field, and we make people have to cover the whole field," Stewart said. "Our offense has been working well."
And when Mountlake Terrace responded with a touchdown on its opening drive of the third quarter, Moore-Taylor came right back with a 60-yard touchdown run.
Moore-Taylor ran 15 times for 174 yards, improving his WesCo 3A-leading season total to 409 yards.
Things only got worse for Terrace (2-1) early in the fourth quarter when the Hawks lost two fumbles that led to two more Meadowdale touchdowns. Connor Hamlett, a 6-foot-7 defensive end, returned one for a 62-yard score.
