Eastlake High School's Emily Hurd was named Gatorade Washington Girls Soccer Player of the Year on Thursday.
Hurd, a 5-foot-6 junior forward, had 19 goals and 12 assists this past season. She was also a Star-Times selection and was earlier named state 4A player of the year by a panel of sportswriters.
The Gatorade award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement, and exemplary character on and off the field. Hurd has a 3.54 grade-point average. A local youth soccer coach, she has volunteered with an area homeless shelter and as a peer math tutor.
Hurd becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May.
"There's really no weakness in her game; she can play every position on the field," said Dick McCormick, the director of coaching for the Crossfire Premier Soccer Club. "She's powerful, skillful, fast, quick and aggressive. She's dynamic and can be creative."
Note
• Najee Ali had 25 points and 21 rebounds as the Rainier Beach boys basketball team broke a two-game losing streak with a 70-54 Metro League win over West Seattle. Mike Reeves had nine blocked shots for Rainier Beach (12-6, 11-4).
