EVERETT — Chris McGrath destroyed Cascade High School's basketball scoring record, but it still wasn't enough in a 79-75 boys basketball loss to Arlington Thursday night.
The 6-foot-1 junior guard scored 49 points, topping the old record by 12. He hit 14 of 16 field-goal attempts, 3 of 4 three-point tries and 12 of 13 free throws. McGrath raised his average to 30.5 points.
Despite his effort, the Bruins (2-6 overall, 1-3 WesCo North) fell behind in the second half and had to foul. Arlington took advantage, sinking 38 of 44 free throws.
Will Heath scored 24 and Lucas Larson had 20 for the Eagles (4-4, 2-3).
Referees will be whistling pink
Basketball officials in King County will blow pink whistles at games from Jan. 12 to 24 to call attention to breast cancer and encourage financial support for research of the disease.
Many of the more than 300 members of the Seattle Officials Women's Basketball Association and the Pacific Northwest Basketball Officials Association are donating part of their game checks to the cause.
Notes
• Senior guard Orlie Golan of Class 1B Northwest Yeshiva scored a girls school-record 36 points in a 63-36 win over Ballard's C team. Golan was coming off a 31-point game Monday in a win over Tulalip Heritage.
• Sean Stickney scored 20 as Lake Stevens (8-2, 5-1 WesCo North) won its sixth straight boys game, 52-45 over Snohomish.
• Sanda Milovic's season-high 24 points helped second-ranked Kentwood (8-0, 5-0 SPSL 4A) coast to an 83-27 girls victory over Kent-Meridian.
