Jeff Gardner, who started the Bonney Lake football program when the high school opened in 2005, has resigned as head coach.
Gardner is an assistant principal at the school this year. According to Sumner School District policy, administrators are not allowed to coach, but a one-year exception was made for Gardner so that he could coach the 2008 season with the seniors who were freshmen when the school opened.
"They knew how important it was to me," said Gardner, who previously was head coach at Puyallup and Black Hills.
The Panthers reached the Class 3A preliminary playoffs this season, losing to Ferndale to finish 5-5. They got to the first round of state playoffs in 2007 before losing to Skyline, the eventual champion, and finished 7-4.
Gardner said he looks forward to watching his younger son and daughter play sports at Puyallup High School. Nick, who plays football, will be a sophomore next fall. Linsey, who plays soccer, is in seventh grade.
