State meet at a glance
Where — King County Aquatic Center, Federal Way.
When — Today (prelims) and Saturday (finals). Event schedule at www.wiaa.com/athletics/swim/ (choose a classification under "Tournament Info").
Tickets — All-tournament pass, adults $15, students and seniors $10. Single-day pass, adults $9, students and seniors $7.
Class 4A
Defending champions — Inglemoor and Garfield.
Contenders — Jackson, Garfield, Snohomish, Ballard, Gig Harbor.
Returning champions — Andie Taylor, Skyline, 200 and 500 free (3A in 2007); Helen Liu, Issaquah, 50 free (3A); Alana Pazevic, Jackson, 100 free; Annemarie Thayer, Ballard, 100 back; Emily Ferreira, Snohomish, 100 breast; Maureen Cardwell, Redmond, 100 fly; Haley Brunner, Roosevelt, 500 free; Stacey Luke, Inglemoor, diving; Shawna Jordan, Auburn, diving (3A).
One to watch — For the second straight year, Skyline's Taylor broke a state record in district competition, crushing a 14-year-old record in the 200 individual medley by more than two seconds. After winning the 200 and 500 free titles each of the past two years, this year the junior will try the 200 IM and 100 free.
Class 3A
Defending champion — Kennedy.
Contenders — Mercer Island, Kennedy, Bellevue, Mount Rainier.

Returning champions — Rachel Godfred, Mercer Island, 200 IM; Kelly Tannhauser, Juanita, 200 free (4A in 2007); Nikki Vetterlein, Kennedy, 100 fly.
One to watch — Godfred, a senior, has finished third or higher in five events in the past three state meets. She anchored the Islanders' winning 200 free relay team last year and is No. 2 seed in 500 free, a new event at state for a do-it-all swimmer.
Class 2A
Defending champion — Sehome.
Contenders — Sehome, Anacortes, Fife.
Returning champions — Nakayla Chan, Fife, 200 IM and 500 free; Kimberly Wascher, North Mason, 100 back.
One to watch — Freshman Natalie Ruiz of Othello enters the 100 back with a qualifying time (57.36) nearly five seconds faster than second seed (and defending champ) Wascher. With her 23.52 in the 50 free, Ruiz is 1.45 seconds faster than her nearest competitor.
