BURIEN — Junior Katy Dunphy scored two of Kennedy's three second-half goals as the top-ranked Lancers opened postseason play with a 3-0 win over sixth-ranked Camas in a first-round match of the Class 3A girls soccer playoffs Wednesday night at Highline Stadium.
Kennedy (19-0-1) advanced to the quarterfinals and on Saturday at 1 p.m. will host the winner of tonight's Bonney Lake-at-Mount Si match. Camas of Vancouver finished 13-3-2.
The shutout, credited to senior keeper Chelsea Lockhart, was Kennedy's 15th of the season. The Lancers have surrendered just four goals all season. "And two of them were own goals," said Lancers coach Doug Stamnes.
Camas put no shots on goal and got no closer to scoring than a roller by Olivia Lovell that went a foot wide of the left post with 20 minutes to play in the second half.
Camas coach Roland Minder said he was missing four starters, but saluted Kennedy's impenetrable defense.
"No excuses," Minder said. "Kennedy is a great team and they took it to us. We didn't get shots on goal. We put four forwards up. I don't know what else we could have done. They have an incredible defense."
Dunphy headed home a crossing pass from Kirsten Olson in the 44th minute, then booted in a floater from Rebekah Kurle in the 71st minute to give the Lancers breathing room. Kurle blasted in a pass from Julia Besagno four minutes later.
Slowed by injuries, Dunphy's goals were only her second and third of the season.
"It was exhilarating," she said. "We're going all the way. We've got a great team."
Stamnes, hoping to bring Kennedy its first girls state soccer title since 2002, was more cautious.
"We're having a great season, but we're going to games one at a time, the old cliché," he said. "I was pleased with the way we played tonight. We knew Camas would be tough, but our defense is really, really solid."
