The Eastlake girls cross-country team took care of business Saturday and ran off with the Sea-King 4A District championship at Lincoln Park.
Next up is a much more important meet — the state championships next Saturday in Pasco where Gig Harbor is the three-time defending champion.
Eastlake placed three runners in the top 10 at district and finished with 35 points in the meet, which comprised of schools from KingCo and Southwest Washington.
Looking ahead to the state meet, Eastlake coach Troy Anderson called Gig Harbor "the 800-pound gorilla" but said, "This year, we definitely have a shot at them."
Last year, Eastlake finished second to Gig Harbor.
One reason for Anderson's optimism is the return of junior Chelsea Orr to the lineup. Orr was 15th at state last year and missed much of this season with a hip injury.
Redmond senior Sarah Lord won the 5,000-meter district race in 18 minutes, 25 seconds, finishing 14 seconds ahead of Garfield junior Anna Dailey. Eastlake sophomore Megan Batty was third in 19:01 and Orr was fourth in 19:01.
Redmond won the boys title with 59 points and was led by junior Mack Young, who won in 15:29.
"This is the first time I've ever won a cross-country race," said Young, who usually finishes behind senior teammate and KingCo champion Aiden Irish. "I feel really good about that."
Young's father, Tony, 46, set a world record for men 45 or older this year when he ran the mile in 4:16.09 at the Portland Track Festival.
Simon Sorensen of Skyline was second in 15:42 and Irish was third in 15:52.
Teams advancing to state with the Eastlake girls were Redmond, Newport and Skyview of Vancouver.
Boys teams headed to Pasco with Redmond are Skyline, Bothell and Issaquah.
