SHORELINE — No seniors. No tradition. No problem for Glacier Peak.
The upstart Grizzlies survived a rocky start to rout Shorecrest 34-7 and earn a spot in the Class 3A preliminary football playoffs.
A first-year school in south Snohomish without a senior class, Glacier Peak passed for 245 yards to run away from Shorecrest, which was knocked out of playoff contention, after a horrible start.
Shorecrest moved 83 yards on three plays after taking the opening kickoff to take a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game. The touchdown came on a 55-yard run by Jordan Brown through a gigantic hole that Brown sprinted through untouched into the end zone.
Rather than fold, the Grizzlies then took over, scoring three times to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.
Tanner Southard, a sophomore, caught five passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns and announced the Grizzlies aren't done yet.
"We definitely can go further," Southard said. "Our whole team knows we can not only go to state but do well there. It's all up to us."
While Glacier Peak was able to move the ball through the air, it was a defensive play that turned the game around. Late in the first half and ahead only 14-7, sophomore Hunter Lundstrom forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Nick Sage in the end zone.
"The players have done a phenomenal job, they've gotten better every single week," Glacier Peak coach Rory Rosenbach said. "They've continued to work and done a great job buying in our system. The results are on the field. Every goal we've set, we've achieved."
The Grizzlies, 3-1 in the WesCo 3A and 5-4 overall, have now won four in a row and are averaging more than 44 points in the wins.
Rosenbach said he wasn't concerned after Shorecrest's opening drive.
"We had some guys out of alignment and we weren't adjusting to the formations and we just had to chat with some guys," Rosenbach said. "Once we did that, we were able to shut it down."
Michael Harris led Shorecrest (2-2, 4-5) with 72 yards on 14 carries. Brown had 66 yards.
