Cross Country | No catching Seattle Prep

With dominating performances that included 1-2-3 finishes in both the boys and girls races, Seattle Prep ran off with Metro League cross-country titles Thursday at Lower Woodland Park.

Junior Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald covered the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 39 seconds, and classmate Laura Sauvage was the fastest girl in 18:46.

Prep seniors Charlie McDonald (15:51) and Erik Berg (15:59) finished 2-3 in the boys race, as did senior girls Carey Parker (18:49) and junior Krista Beyer (19:34).

It was the fourth straight league title for the Prep boys, and their total of 17 points (1-2-3-5-6) is believed to be a league record. The runner who prevented a perfect 1-2-3-4-5 finish for Prep was Ingraham junior Abraham Berhe, a transfer from Roosevelt who placed fourth.

"We ran really well today," said Prep boys coach John Robertson. His team is ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 3A behind North Central of Spokane, which is ranked No. 1 overall in the nation. The Prep girls, who finished with 21 points, are ranked No. 1 in the state.

O'Donoghue-McDonald made his move on "Soap Box Hill" about halfway into the race.

"I got a couple seconds on them and then I just felt perfect and kept rolling," he said.

Sauvage didn't break away from Parker in the girls race until only about 100 yards remained. Sauvage finished second last year to Lakeside senior Margo Cramer.

O'Donoghue-McDonald's brother, Max, set the Lower Woodland record of 15:22.4 as a Prep senior in 2006. He is redshirting this season at the University of Washington.

Bishop Blanchet was second in the boys competition with 67 points and second in girls with 61. Hale was third in both events and scored 84 in each race.

SPSL 4A

At Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, Julian Blake-Cowan and Kenny Krotzer finished 1-2 for Auburn Riverside, and Tahoma swept the boys and girls team championships.

Blake-Cowan, who won the SPSL 3A title and placed fifth at state last year before Riverside moved up to 4A, won in 15:44.3, almost 16 seconds ahead of the pack. Kelton Sears and Casey Campbell finished third and fourth for Tahoma.

In the girls race, Erika Martin (18:54.3) and Chloe Treleven of Curtis placed 1-2, followed by Tahoma teammates Hannah Mittelstaedt and Julianna Mock.

KingCo 4A

At Lincoln Park in West Seattle, Aiden Irish (15:23) beat Redmond teammate Mack Young by six seconds in the boys race, and the Mustangs' Sarah Lord and Jillian Jaccard ran 1-2 in the girls race. Irish and Mack placed second and third last year. Lord, fifth at state last year, repeated as KingCo girls champ. Skyline (54) edged Redmond (60) for the boys team title. Eastlake was a runaway girls team champ.

KingCo 3A

At Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, Evan Sadler (15:59.05) and Lindsay Benster (18:49.42) won the boys and girls races and led their Mercer Island teams to championships. Sadler, the runner-up last year, beat second-place Eric Bice of Liberty by nearly seven seconds. Benster won by almost 17 seconds.

Emerald City League

At Kelsey Creek Park in Bellevue, Seattle Academy's Alex Johnson (16:54) repeated as boys champion by a nearly 26-second margin, and freshman Maddie Meyers (19:09.1) of Northwest School won by more than a minute in the girls race. Bellevue Christian swept the team titles.

Sea-Tac League

At Trophy Lake GC, Jake Kornbau (17:44) and BreAnna Romerdahl (20:13) set boys and girls course records for Mount Rainier Lutheran, leading their teams to championships.
