Bellevue High School junior Kate Bennett has been selected to play on the national U-17 soccer team in the first U-17 World Cup, which begins Tuesday in New Zealand. She leaves Thursday.

Three weeks ago, Bennett left the Wolverines to practice with the boys team at the Crossfire Premier Academy. The move gave her more advanced training before the most recent national team camp, where she impressed enough to get selected for the World Cup team.

"The team was all for it, and totally understood," Bellevue coach Jon Anderson said. "She had to do what was right for her."

Note

Tyson Van Dam, a 2001 Oak Harbor graduate and former player, has been named baseball coach at the school. Van Dam also played for Edmonds Community College and the University of North Carolina-Pembroke.

Times staff reporter Tom Wyrwich
