Eighth-ranked Eastside Catholic won its fourth straight game Saturday, and the Crusaders' Marion Bactol continued a personal streak.
The senior scored on a 90-yard kickoff return as Eastside Catholic cruised to a 45-17 Metro League Mountain Division win at Bishop Blanchet's Mickey Naish Field.
Bactol has had a return for a score in three consecutive games: a kickoff against Lakeside, a punt against Bainbridge and now another kickoff.
The fans of Eastside Catholic (5-1, 3-0 league) would like Bactol to take another one to the end zone Friday in the looming showdown against O'Dea (5-1, 3-0) for the division title.
Crusaders' coach Bill Marsh called the win over the Braves "exactly the way we wanted it to be." That was because his starters played well, there were no serious injuries and he was able to start unloading his bench in the third quarter.
The game's most electric play was Bactol's kickoff return. Senior Mike Bush made a big block for the assist.
"He led me all the way," he said.
Bush did more than play escort during the game. He rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries and scored on a pair of 1-yard plunges.
Bactol also finished with two touchdowns (the second on a 12-yard run) and made an interception.
Eastside Catholic's senior quarterback Zach Cuaresma completed five of eight passes for 82 yards, including a 47-yard TD to Spencer Esau and a 12-yard TD to David Carlton. Cuaresma demonstrated that he is a dual threat, rushing eight times for 57 yards, including gains of 15, 17 and 20 yards.
Senior quarterback Spencer Marquiss completed 13 of 22 passes for 183 yards with two interceptions for the Braves, and senior running back Cameron Cutter carried 16 times for 49 yards. The loss dropped the Bishop Blanchet to 2-4, 1-2.
