LAKE STEVENS — In a matchup of two very different, but equally prolific offenses, an unheralded Marysville-Pilchuck defense forced its way into the spotlight.

Marysville-Pilchuck forced six turnovers, leading to all of its 28 points, and the 10th-ranked Tomahawks overwhelmed Lake Stevens 28-0 in a WesCo North Division game Friday night.

The Tomahawks defense swarmed Lake Stevens quarterback Nick Baker, forcing him into his worst game of the season. Not even the surprising return of Vikings do-everything senior Bo Dickinson could get the Vikings offense on track.

"I can't say enough about our defense," said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Brandon Carson, whose team is 6-0 overall and 4-0 in WesCo North. "We had some great cover guys, our defensive line got a rush on Baker and we were able to force a couple turnovers.

"We've gotten a little bit better every week," Carson said. "And we're just getting better and better."

Baker, who set school records for season completions and career passing yards Friday, finished 20-of-33 passing for 179 yards and two interceptions. He was sacked twice.

Lake Stevens coach Tom Tri credited the Tomahawks' defensive line for limiting the production of his star quarterback.

"I knew they had a very physical front group of four or five, and they're all speed rushers that are fast and physical," Tri said.

Dickinson returned to the starting lineup for the Vikings (4-2, 2-1) just three weeks after breaking two vertebrae in a Week 3 game against Stanwood, but had to be helped off the field in the third quarter after spraining his ankle.

His early return, coupled with Lake Stevens' fireworks display at halftime for homecoming, appeared to set the stage for a celebration in front of a packed home crowd.

But the Vikings offense could never get going.

"We just never seemed to fire on all cylinders," Tri said. "And I give Marysville all the credit. They came to play tonight and played physical. They handed it to us."

Marysville-Pilchuck opened when Ryan Sterley ran around the left end for 32-yard touchdown after intercepting a Baker pass only a couple plays earlier.

"That was great," said Carlson of the quick start.

Just before halftime, M-P scored again when Devin Peterson found Jarrett Finau for an 11-yard touchdown reception. The Tomahawks added scoring runs in the second half by Austin Denton, who had 175 yards on 24 carries, and Caleb Posey.
