BELLEVUE -- Bellevue and Skyline, schools with decorated football programs, proved they have more than just football talent Thursday night in a nonleague girls soccer game.
The result was a stalemate as the Wolverines, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, played to a scoreless tie with the 4A Spartans at Bellevue High School. The game featured an under-17 national team midfielder in Kate Bennett of Bellevue, and a future Pac-10 player in Skyline's Kiara Williams, headed to Arizona State.
"There's a great rivalry between these schools," said Skyline coach Don Braman. "The girls always play really hard in a good clean, physical game. They represent soccer in our state really well."
After a sluggish first half, Skyline (1-0-1) got most of the opportunities in the second.
In the 55th minute, Skyline sophomore Brittanee Randle fired a 25-yard shot that dipped toward the corner of the net before being saved by Bellevue's Nicoline Bach. On the ensuing corner kick, junior Alisha Connors couldn't connect on a wide-open shot from 8 yards.
Skyline goalkeepers Jill Stika and Tina Vargas combined for the shutout. Bach shared the shutout with junior Alyssa Gilbert for the Wolverines (0-1-1).
