PORTLAND — With its quarterback struggling and its defense making a small lead hold, Skyline put the ball in Gino Simone's hands. And he did the rest as No. 1 Skyline beat Sheldon of Oregon 21-0 in the nightcap of the Les Schwab Best of West event at PGE Park.
Midway through the third quarter, Simone took a handoff, cut to the left sideline and ran for an 87-yard touchdown, which gave Skyline a 14-0 lead. In the fourth, sophomore Kasen Williams returned an interception 68 yards for an insurance touchdown against Sheldon, last year's Class 6A champion in Oregon.
Quarterback Jake Heaps went 6 for 18 for 95 yards in his opener.
Skyline senior Joey Evans rushed for 88 yards.
