KingCo 4A
Crown Division |
Ballard Beavers
Location: Ballard
Coach: John Bowers (first year)
2007: 5-5 overall, 5-3 KingCo 4A, lost in state qualifying round
Key returnees (*returning starter): TE/LB *Moussa Gloyd, 6-0, 190, Sr.; RB/LB *Tim Kearny, 5-10, 190, Sr.; LB/WR *James Mullaney, 6-1, 190, Sr.; QB/DB *Carlos Stanley, 5-8, 160, Sr.; DB/WR/RB *Matt Law-Phipps, 6-1, 190, Jr.
Impact newcomers: OT/DT Linton Rowan, 6-2, 230, Sr.; OT/DE Lee Richardson, 6-2 ½, 230, Sr.; OG/DL Jack Valdez, 5-11, 235, Sr.
Outlook: With the new KingCo 4A alignment, three of the five teams Ballard beat last season are no longer on the schedule. Two of those opponents have been replaced with Bothell and Skyline, two state contenders.
Bothell Cougars
Location: Bothell
Coach: Tom Bainter (ninth year, 75-18 record)
![]()
2007: 13-1, 8-0 KingCo 4A, state runner-up
Key returnees (*returning starter): FB/LB *Trey Burwick, 5-7, 213, Sr.; RB/LB *Patrick Ottorbech, 5-7, 187, Sr.; WR/DB *Kurt Stottlemyer, 5-9 ½, 171, Sr.; OL/DL *Jackson Pierce, 6-0, 230, Sr.; WR/DB *Perry Conricode, 6-1 ½, 192, Sr.; OL/LB *Robby Storm, 6-0, 209, Sr.; OL *Julian Haiel, 5-10 ½, 228, Sr.; OL *Zach Cooper, 6-1 ½, 228, Jr.
Impact newcomers: QB James Korn, 5-11, 162, Sr.; RB/DB Colby Burk, 5-8, 165, Jr.; TE/DE Evan Hudson, 6-6, 220, Jr.; TE/DE Michael Hartvigson, 6-5, 213, Jr.
Outlook: In back-to-back seasons, the Cougars came up one touchdown short of a state championship. As usual, this Bothell team will be small and fast, and the Cougars will turn often to the backfield pair of Burwick and Ottorbech, who are also two of KingCo's top linebackers.
Inglemoor Vikings
Location: Kenmore
Coach: Frank Naish (30th year, 165-114)
2007: 7-5, 5-3 KingCo 4A, made state quarterfinals
Key returnees (*returning starter): RB/LB *Paul Ena, 6-1, 220, Sr.; QB/CB *Todd Campbell, 6-5, 215, Sr.; OL/LB *Andrew Kienast, 6-0, 210, Sr.; K *Anthony Arena, 5-11, 180, Sr.; WR/DB Austin Hueter, 6-0, 180, Sr.; WR/DB Ben Nystrom, 6-1, 185, Sr.; RB/DB Zach Pattison, 5-10, 160, Sr.; RB/DB Austin Terry, 5-9, 165, Sr.; RB/LB Lance Larson, 5-10, 170, Jr.
Impact newcomers: RB/LB Lance Rudolf, 5-10, 165, Jr.; OL/LB Erick Raynes, 6-2, 205, Sr.; OL/DL Graham Shipley, 5-10, 225, Sr.; OL/DL Anthony Gilian, 6-0, 230, Sr.; WR/DB Craig Jacobson, 5-11, 155, Jr.
Outlook: Campbell suffered a broken collarbone in the opening weeks last season, and his return could help this offense overcome the loss of its top two rushers and top three receivers. Ena, one of the top five linebackers in the state, anchors the defense.
Lake Washington Kangaroos
Location: Kirkland
Coach: Ray Roberts (first year)
2007: 0-9, 0-8 KingCo 4A
Key returnees (*returning starter): QB/CB *Erik Folkers, 6-2, 200, Sr.; TE/LB *Conner Akiyama, 6-0, 208, Sr.; C/DT *David Oliver, 6-2, 220, Sr.; OT/DT *Brian Sinclair, 6-3, 230, Jr.; RB/DB *Matt Hanson, 6-1, 180, Jr.; WR/DB *Spencer Wozeniak, 6-1, 170, Sr.; WR/DB Brad Duncan, 6-0, 170, Sr.
Impact newcomers: RB/LB Ryan Dunbabin, 6-0, 190, Sr.; RB/LB Nate Close, 6-2, 185, Sr.; OT/DE Cody Peltier, 6-2, 180, Sr.
Outlook: The KingCo 4A isn't kind to rebuilding teams, and a brutal schedule will make it difficult for the Kangaroos to make a large turnaround. But even if it doesn't show in their record, Roberts expects to make strides this season.
Roosevelt Roughriders
Location: Seattle
Coach: Jeff Ware (sixth year, 13-32)
2007: 4-5, 4-4 KingCo 4A
Key returnees (*returning starter): WR/DB *Bobby Walker, 6-2, 180, Sr.; C/DT *Ryan Heller, 5-10, 210 Sr.; OG/DE *John Yuzvyak, 6-4, 225, Sr.; QB/DB *Nick Foster, 6-2, 210, Sr.; WR/DB *Elliot Reid 6-2, 160, Sr.; WR/DB *Jordan Moniz, 6-2, 180, Sr.; RB/DB *Paul Woolworth, 5-7, 170, Sr.; RB/LB A.J. Baxter, 5-9, 175, Sr.; RB/DB Kalliy Ceesay, 6-1, 180, Sr.
Impact newcomers: RB/LB Hampton Terry, 6-2, 195, Sr.; RB/LB Kyle Yamamoto, 5-7, 165, Sr.; OT/DE Brian Hutchison, 6-5, 225, So.; OG/DT Sugarsuren Byambasuren, 5-9, 230, Jr.
Outlook: Foster is a third-year starter at quarterback, but the Roughriders will have to replace their leading rusher and receiver from last season. The 'Riders were a win away from the playoffs last season, but the conference competition just got tougher.
Woodinville Falcons
Location: Woodinville
Coach: Wayne Maxwell (fourth year, 33-15)
2007: 7-4, 6-2 KingCo 4A, made state quarterfinals
Key returnees (*returning starter): RB/DB *Jordan Todesco, 5-7, 155, Sr.; WR/DB *Eric Ninomiya, 5-10, 180, Sr.; OT *Chris Burrus, 6-2, 215, Sr.; RB/LB *Matt Brumfield, 5-10, 205, Sr.; OL/DL *Sam Graham, 6-2, 245, Sr.; WR/DB *Mike Brumfield, 5-11, 165, Sr.; QB/DB *Tim Ip, 5-9, 165, Jr.; WR/LB *Michael Wymann, 6-2, 185, Sr.; WR/DB *Kyle Clifford, 6-2, 215, Sr.
Impact newcomers: WR/DB Trevor Kelly, 6-0, 185, Jr.; OL/DL Michael Helbock, 6-0, 215, Sr.; OL/DL Maxx Forde, 6-3, 235, Jr.; OL/DL Robert DeLisle, 6-0, 220, Sr.
Outlook: Todesco won't run over anyone, but he runs through defenses as well as anyone. Ninomiya and Mike and Matt Brunfield are both playmakers. Woodinville has to be considered a contender, but it will likely have to beat Bothell for the first time since 2005 to win the division.
KingCo 4A Crest Division |
Eastlake Wolves
Location: Sammamish
Coach: Gene Dales (fourth year, 27-7)
2007: 10-2, 7-1 KingCo 4A, made state quarterfinals
Key returnees (*returning starter): OT/LB *Turner Lee, 6-3, 220, Sr.; WR/DB *Scott Payton, 5-10, 175, Sr.; RB/SS *Stephen Nasca, 5-10, 185, Sr.; WR *Jeff Grotjahn 6-1, 180, Sr.; QB Drake Furcini, 6-3, 180, Sr.
Impact newcomers: TE/LB Austin Reifeis, 6-3, 218, Jr.; C/NG Zach Nicholson, 6-0, 215, Sr.; G/DE Derek Chaney, 6-0, 205, Sr.; WR Paul Wright, 6-1, 180, Sr.
Outlook: The Wolves had plenty of holes to fill — starting with replacing three Star Times picks a year ago — but KingCo coaches still expect Eastlake to contend in the tough Crest division.
Garfield Bulldogs
Location: Seattle
Coach: Anthony Allen (fourth year, 2-25)
2007: 1-8, 1-7 KingCo 4A
Key returnees (*returning starter): OT/DT *Deandre Coleman, 6-5, 295, Sr.; OG/DT *Warren Tia Tia, 5-11, 310, Sr.; QB *Sean Foster, 6-3, 170, Jr.; WR *Carson Dunn, 6-1, 170, Sr.; RB *T'Andre Jones, 5-6, 165, Jr.; RB/LB *Valentino Coleman, 6-1, 245, So.
Impact newcomers: WR/CB DeAndre Taylor, 6-1, 172, Sr.; WR/CB Jaron Cox, 6-0, 170, Sr.; RB/CB Pape Mbaye, 6-0, 170, Sr.
Outlook: Coleman is considered the top recruit in the state, but he's likely to face double-teams each week. Garfield is the only city team in the new KingCo Crest Division, and each week on the league schedule will be an uphill climb for the Bulldogs.
Issaquah Eagles
Location: Issaquah
Coach: Chris Bennett (first year)
2007: 6-4, 5-3 KingCo 3A, lost in state qualifying round
Key returnees (*returning starters): RB/DB *Grant Gellatly, 5-10, 175, Jr.; OL/DL *Dillon Reagan, 6-3, 285, Sr.; TE/DE *Sean Stuby, 6-4, 225, Sr.; OL/DL *Christian Rennie, 6-5, 280, Sr.; WR/DB *Ross Zuhl, 6-0, 165, Sr.; WR/DB *Brennan Miller, 6-0, 170, Sr.; RB/LB *Dustin Talley, 5-11, 185, Sr.; LB *Nik Landdeck, 6-1, 185, So.; DB *Ryan Tiernan, 5-11, 150, Sr.; K *Gavin Schumaker, 5-10, 160, So.; RB/DB *Kyle Hansen, 6-1, 170, Sr.; QB Joey Bradley, 6-1, 170, Sr.
Impact newcomers: OL/DL Greg Finch, 5-10, 230, Jr.; OL/DL Daniel Fleischman, 6-6, 250, Jr.; TE/DE James Bowsher, 6-2, 205, Sr.
Outlook: The Eagles return a strong part of last season's playoff team, and they should have one of the league's top offenses. Bradley was not the starter a year ago but received plenty of time, and Gellatly is one of the league's top athletes.
Newport Knights
Location: Bellevue
Coach: Mike Miller (fourth year, 23-18)
2007: 7-4, 5-3 KingCo 3A, lost in first round of state playoffs
Key returnees (*returning starter): OL/DL *Jake Luwe, 6-3, 200, Sr.; OL/DL *Alex Kairis, 6-2, 210, Jr.; OL/DL Kolbi Tabakci, 5-10, 230, Sr.; OL/DL Prestin Mo, 6-0, 215, Sr.; OL/DL Graham Bennett, 6-6, 233, Sr.; OL/DL Francis Dupar, 6-1, 200, Sr; WR/DB Andrew Longhorn, 5-1, 160, Sr.
Impact newcomers: OL/LB Matt Murray, 6-0, 180, So.; OL/LB Reid Dilley, 5-10, 195, Jr.; RB/LB Doug Sames, 5-11, 185, Jr.; QB/DB Ross Quarre, 6-0, 175, Jr.
Outlook: The Knights pushed through to the playoffs in KingCo 3A, but this run-oriented team will have to replace its top five rushers from last season and much of its secondary. Its strength, as usual, lies in its offensive line. The move to KingCo 4A won't make things any easier.
Redmond Mustangs
Location: Redmond
Coach: Mike Pluschke (fifth year, 18-18)
2007: 5-4, 4-4 KingCo 4A
Key returnees (*returning starter): QB/DB *David Gilbertson, 6-2, 190, Sr.; WR/DB *Cameron Sandquist, 5-10, 165, Sr.; WR/DB *John Martino, 6-0, 185, Sr.; OL/DL *Brady Lisoski, 6-4, 315, Sr.; OL/DL *Ethan Olesen, 6-0, 235, Sr.; OL/DL *Matt Carey, 6-2, 280, Sr.; RB/LB *Sean Shewey, 5-11, 185, Sr.; OL/DL *Colin Porter, 6-4, 290, Jr.
Impact newcomers: OL/DL Paul Glassman, 6-1, 315, Sr.; RB/DB/KR Michael Conforto, 6-1, 185, So.; TE/DE Daniel Hill, 6-5, 225, Sr.
Outlook: The Mustangs have a beefed-up line (averaging 270 pounds) and one of the top senior quarterbacks in the state, and they have hopes that extend beyond the regular season. But oh, that schedule: Redmond plays Class 2A champ Prosser and 4A runner-up Bothell, and that's before it gets into KingCo Crest play.
Skyline Spartans
Location: Sammamish
Coach: Mat Taylor (first year)
2007: 14-0, 8-0 KingCo 3A, Class 3A state champions
Key returnees (*returning starter): WR/DB *Gino Simone, 6-0, 175, Sr.; QB *Jake Heaps, 6-2, 190, Jr.; WR/DB *Kasen Williams, 6-3, 195, So.; WR/DB *William Chandler, 6-2, 185, Sr.; WR/DB *Jake Knecht, 6-0, 175, Sr.; OL/DL *Rob Tramonte, 6-2, 250, Sr.; OL/DL *Jase Butorac, 6-3, 265, Jr.; OL/DL *Grant Engel, 6-2, 265, Sr.; OLB *Ryan Somers, 5-10, 165, Sr.; LB *Anthony Dematteo, 5-11, 185, Jr.
Impact newcomers: OL/DL Evan Day, 6-3, 260, Jr.; TE/LB Cooper Pelluer, 6-3, 195, Jr.; OL/DL Michael Stead, 6-3, 225, Jr.; RB Joey Evans, 5-11, 180, Sr.
Outlook: With the top-rated QB and the best WR tandem in the state, the Spartans move up to Class 4A with the rest of the state expecting them to win another state title. But to get through a loaded conference, they'll have to make up for losses on defense.
