Darren Rawie of Mount Rainier was named Class 3A Co-Coach of the Year on the 2008 All-State baseball teams selected by the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association.
Rawie, who shared the honor with Scot Meeker of Kelso, led the Des Moines school to a 20-6 record and a spot in the 3A state playoffs for the sixth time in his eight seasons as coach.
Trevor May of Kelso was named 3A State Player of the Year, and Brett Jacobs of Richland earned the 4A honor. Todd McDougall of Olympia was named 4A Coach of the Year. In 2A, Kevin Komstadius of East Valley of Yakima was Player of the Year, and Cory White of Lynden was Coach of the Year. In 1A-B, Ryan Knutz was the top player and Jerry Streigel top coach in a Rochester sweep.
A total of 23 players from the Seattle area earned first-team all-state honors, 12 in 4A, seven in 3A and four in 2A.
Notes
• Courtney Kirkwood of Othello was named Washington's Gatorade girls track and field athlete of the year for the second consecutive year. The senior, who will compete for Washington State, won the javelin and the 100-meter hurdles at the Class 2A state meet, giving her five state titles.
• Snohomish's baseball team, which won the 4A state championship last month, was ranked No. 32 in the final Fab 50 National Baseball Rankings by rivals.com.
