Steve Henderson, 27, has been hired as boys basketball coach at Bainbridge High School. He has been the coach since 2003 at East Valley of Spokane, his alma mater.
Henderson succeeds Scott Orness, who stepped down after this past season, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. Orness coached at Bainbridge for seven years and led the Spartans to the Class 3A state-title game in 2007 before losing to O'Dea.
Henderson will be a part-time physical education and health instructor at Bainbridge, according to athletic director Annette Duvall. She said five candidates were interviewed for the job.
Notes
• Lake Washington senior Amanda Juarez has committed to play basketball at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
• Chaz Welsh, who has coached various teams at The Northwest School since graduating from there in 1997, has been named girls basketball coach at the Seattle school.
Times staff reporters Craig Smith and Tom Wyrwich contributed to this report.
