It doesn't line up like this every year at the Northwest Shootout, but this time around, neither boys all-star team, Washington or Oregon, can say its top players couldn't make it.
"You can't say there's an asterisk by [it] this year," said Mountlake Terrace coach Nalin Sood, an assistant for the Washington team. "This is a great head-to-head matchup."
A year ago, Washington cut Oregon's lead in the series to 9-4 with a win, though the Oregon team was without perhaps the best two players in state history: All-Americans Kevin Love (now of UCLA) and Kyle Singler (Duke).
This time around, both teams are bringing their best for Sunday's game at the Chiles Center in Portland. The boys will play at 6 p.m., preceded by the girls game at 4 p.m.
The Washington boys team features Reggie Moore, a guard from Class 3A champion Rainier Beach, and three players from two-time 4A champion Ferris: center DeAngelo Casto, guard Shawn Stockton and forward Jared Karstetter. It's the first time Sood can remember three players from one school making the team, selected by a committee of coaches.
"That wasn't a factor in the decision-making," Sood said. "All three of those kids deserve to play in the Northwest Shootout."
The Oregon team features Oregon signee Drew Wiley, ranked by Scout.comas the second-best small forward on the West Coast, along with Washington State signee Michael Harthun and Gonzaga recruit Andy Poling.
"This is one of their better teams for sure," Sood said.
The Washington girls are headlined by Prairie's Ashley Corral, the state's only McDonald's All-American; Brittany Kennedy from three-time Class 4A champ Lewis and Clark; and Katie Grad from two-time 3A champ Auburn Riverside. All are guards. Corral has signed with USC, Kennedy with Oregon State and Grad with Washington State.
"It's an incredible group of girls," said Inglemoor coach John Augustavo, an assistant on the Washington team, which he said will be "a bit of a guard-oriented team."
Oregon leads the girls series 7-6.
