WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A spokesman for a Walla Walla high school says a student who was fatally injured in a pole vault accident was not a novice.
Walla Walla Catholic Schools acting president David Schmitz says Ryan Moberg had qualified last year for the state track championship.
The 18-year-old from Walla Walla was practicing with the team Monday in the gym at DeSales Catholic High School when he hit his head. He was taken to St. Mary Medical Center where nursing supervisor Char Brown says he died Wednesday.
A coach was present at the practice, which had been scheduled during spring break.
Schmitz says two prayer services have been held for grieving students.
Moberg was an honor student who planned to go to college.
