30th anniversary Star Times basketball teams

Thirty years ago, gas was 65 cents a gallon, Microsoft was a startup and the movie "Star Wars" was all the rage. The world has changed, but there has been a constant in The Seattle Times • Star Times. Borrowing its names from the hit movie, our all-area high-school basketball teams debuted 30 years ago. Today, we again honor the best in the Seattle Area

BOYS

Josh Smith

Kentwood, Center, 6-9, Soph.

After helping Kentwood place eighth at the Class 4A state tournament as a freshman, Smith enjoyed a monster season, averaging 21.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and nearly four blocks per game. His eye-popping 74 shooting percentage is a school record, and he also set the season rebounding mark. The 270-pounder was co-MVP of the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division.

Reggie Moore

Rainier Beach, Guard, 6-0, Sr.

Quarterback of a Rainier Beach team that recently won its third straight Metro League title. Moore earned a reputation for contributing whatever the Vikings need on a given night, whether it is points, assists or defense. The Fresno State recruit averages 13.5 points and 11.5 assists and 3.0 steals. He has good shooting range but also can drive to the basket or pull up and hit mid-range shots.

Peyton Siva

Franklin, Guard, 6-1, Jr.

Finished second in KingCo 4A scoring with 19.5 points per game and led the conference in assists. The high-flying Siva scored 45 points in a December victory against Rainier Beach, the state's top-ranked Class 3A team, and led the Quakers to an undefeated conference season. Is considering playing in college at Lousiville, Washington, Arizona or Kansas.

Renado Parker

Kentridge, Forward, 6-5, Sr.

The four-year starter became the Chargers' career scoring leader this season and has led them back to the Class 4A state tournament, where they finished second last season. Parker averages 21.9 points, shooting 64 percent from the field, along with 9.8 rebounds. Has scored 12 or more in every game. Voted the co-MVP of the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division.

Tony Wroten

Garfield, Guard, 6-5, Fr.

Wroten led KingCo 4A in scoring at 20.2 points per game, but he was also in the conference's top five in rebounds (8.8) and assists (4.0) and the top 10 in blocks (1.1) and steals (2.0). Wroten, ranked by hoopscooponline.com as the top freshman in the country and the first ninth-grader to make Star Times in basketball, helped Garfield make its second consecutive trip to state.

Mike Downs

Bellevue Christian, coach

Led Bellevue Christian to the No. 1 state ranking in Class 1A, the Emerald City League title and a trip to the state tournament. The 2005 and 2006 state champs beat reigning 1A champ Brewster by 20 and also beat Jackson and South Kitsap, 4A schools at least five times Bellevue Christian's size.

GIRLS

Lindsey Moore

Kentwood, Guard, 5-10, Jr.

Moore, one of the area's most well-rounded players, averages 17.8 points, 7.1 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 steals. She is the key reason the Covington school is returning to the Class 4A state tournament after last year's third-place finish. The MVP of the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division is considered one of the state's top 2009 recruits.

Eryn Jones

Meadowdale, Guard, 5-8, Sr.

The Portland State recruit leads the area in scoring with 22.6 points. Also averages 5.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.7 steals, and shoots 53.8 percent from three-point range. Looking to lead Mavericks of Lynnwood back to state tournament for 13th straight year. Has scored at least 10 points in every game, including a career-high 33 in Jan. 8 win over Kamiak of Mukilteo.

Kristi Kingma

Jackson, Guard, 5-11, Sr.

The two-time Star Times selection led Jackson of Mill Creek to its third straight Class 4A state appearance. The Washington signee averages 22.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals. Scored career highs of 36 and 34 points in Northwest District 4A tournament games against Lake Stevens and Oak Harbor.

Brittany Gray

Bainbridge, Forward, 5-11, Jr.

The most dominant post presence in the area averaged more than 19 points and 12 rebounds in the regular season. The junior plans to join her brother, Steven, a Star Times selection in 2007, at Gonzaga in 2009. Led the Spartans in scoring in 15 of the last 18 games as the Spartans seek their first state berth since 2004.

Katie Grad

Auburn Riverside, Guard, 5-8, Sr.

The MVP of the South Puget Sound League 3A gives the Ravens high hopes of defending their state championship. She averages 21.7 points, scoring at least 13 in every game, along with 10.1 rebounds and 4.5 steals. Committed to Washington State as a junior, when she helped Riverside knock off heralded Chief Sealth in the state championship game.

Karen Blair

Ballard, coach

In her third year at Ballard, Blair has guided the Beavers to the best season in school history. Blair, twice Star Times coach of the year at Meadowdale, led Ballard to a 18-2 regular season, a share of the KingCo Mountain Division title and Ballard's first trip to the Class 4A tournament.
