As expected, Metro League principals this week approved a proposal to expand from two to three divisions for next basketball season, according to Al Hairston, athletic coordinator for the Seattle School District.

The change is prompted by Franklin's return to the Class 3A league in the fall after 10 years in KingCo 4A.

The divisions:

Mountain — Bishop Blanchet, O'Dea/Holy Names, Lakeside, Seattle Prep, Eastside Catholic.

Sound — Bainbridge, West Seattle, Chief Sealth, Rainier Beach.

Valley — Franklin, Ingraham, Nathan Hale, Cleveland.

Notes

• Monroe hammer thrower Zack Richards has accepted a track scholarship to Iowa State. Richards' career best is 221 feet, 3 inches. He finished second last summer in the national Junior Olympics.

Charmaine Barlow, who averaged 14.2 points for the Chief Sealth girls basketball team, signed a letter of intent to play at Idaho.
