Roosevelt girls basketball coach Gregg Kalina tried to play down his team's expectations for Wednesday's matchup against fourth-ranked Ballard.

So much for that.

The Roughriders easily upset the Beavers, 44-31, and the teams are tied for the top spot in the KingCo 4A Mountain Division with one game apiece left in the regular season.

"I told the girls it wasn't a big game, not that we don't respect Ballard," Kalina said. "A big game to me is when you're playing a loser-out."

But Roosevelt junior Frannie Hemmelgarn, who scored a game-high 10 points, said the game was all her team could think about.

"We were ready to play tonight," Hemmelgarn said. "All day we were talking about it, getting ready for the game."

Roosevelt (16-3 overall, 12-2 league) held Ballard (17-2, 12-2) scoreless for a six-minute span over the first and second quarters while building a 12-point lead.

The Roughriders held a 27-12 halftime advantage after getting out to as much as a 17-point lead with less than two minutes left in the second.

It was the mirror image of Roosevelt's performance in December at Ballard, a game the Roughriders lost 50-26.

"We let their pressure take us out of any continuity, and it made it hard," Ballard coach Karen Blair said. "They came out and wanted it more, and we didn't come out and match the intensity."

Sophomore Alexandria Lawrence scored seven points to lead the Beavers, who were held to a single field goal in the third quarter before mounting a 14-6 fourth quarter.
