Fifth-ranked Mount Rainier High School of Des Moines will be without three boys basketball starters, including the top two scorers in the Seamount League, for the next three weeks.
Alfie Miller, Jon Morine and Theo Bowie were suspended from the team late last week.
Catherine Carbone Rogers, communications director for the Highline School District, verified that three players were suspended for "violation of the athletic participation agreement," but would not identify them. However, an outside source confirmed the players are Miller, Morine and Bowie, none of whom played in the Rams' victory last Friday over Evergreen of White Center.
Miller and Morine rank 1-2 in the Seamount League in scoring average at 23.8 points and 18.8, respectively. Bowie averages 6.7.
The Highline School District sanction for violation of the participation agreement is four weeks or four events, whichever is greater. In this instance, the suspension is four weeks, which dates to last week.
When the suspensions have been served, the three can apply for reinstatement and could be eligible to play in the West Central 3A District tournament, if the Rams qualify.
Mount Rainier is 10-0 in Seamount games, 15-1 overall, and rated No. 5 in Class 3A.
"The coaching staff is not giving up on the season," said athletic director Darren Rawie, who was instructed not to comment otherwise on the situation.
