SAN DIEGO — Senior guard Kayla Williams scored seven of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, and the Ballard girls came back to beat St. Mary's of Berkeley, Calif., 47-44 to win the Surf Division of the Surf 'N Slam tournament at Scripps Ranch High School.

The Beavers (10-0) outscored St. Mary's 15-8 in the fourth.

Williams had four three-pointers, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jeanette Hansen, a 6-5 foreign-exchange student from Denmark, had 12 rebounds and four blocks for Ballard, which is ranked eighth in Class 4A.

"St. Mary's was undefeated, so it was a great game for us," said Ballard coach Karen Blair. "We came to play great-caliber competition, and we definitely had that [Saturday]."

Lake Stevens wins with defense

PHOENIX — Lake Stevens' boys basketball team proved that defense really does win championships.

The Vikings forced seven turnovers in the fourth quarter and held Woodinville to four points in the period for a 53-42 win on Saturday in the championship game of the Cactus Division at the Cactus Jam.

Division MVP Jordan Carter, a senior guard, scored eight of his nine points in the fourth quarter for Lake Stevens (7-1) and junior forward Sean Stickney had 10 points and six rebounds.

Kyle Clifford led Woodinville (4-6) with 15 points.

Bonney Lake boys

take Slam crown

PACIFIC BEACH, Calif. — Paul McMullen hit a 27-footer to get Bonney Lake into overtime, then converted a layup with five seconds left in the extra period to lift the Panthers boys to a 50-49 win over Bella Vista of Fair Oaks, Calif., in the championship game in the Slam Division of the Surf 'N Slam tournament at Mission Bay High School.

Cash Henningsen got the assist on the winning shot after driving the lane and drawing the defense.

McMullen, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, had 16 points to pace the unranked Panthers (6-4), who fought back after trailing 13-1 in the first quarter. Senior guard Zach McMullen had 12 points and eight rebounds for 3A Bonney Lake, and Citron Jackson, also a senior guard, added 12.

Auburn 67, Decatur 63

Ryan Snowden had a game-high 22 points, and the Trojans (10-0) beat the host Gators (10-1) in the championship game of the Harbour Homes Holiday Classic. Auburn is ranked third in 3A and Decatur, which was led by Darious Walker's 17 points, is No. 3 in 4A.

Kentwood 54, Prairie 41

Josh Smith, a 6-9 sophomore, had 25 points to lead the Conquerors (8-2), ranked ninth in 4A, past the Falcons of Brush Prairie in the championship game of the River Ridge Winter Challenge at Saint Martin's College in Lacey.

Gahr (Cerritos, Calif.) 96,

Franklin 89

The Quakers (7-2), top-ranked in 4A, committed 28 turnovers and couldn't hold on to a six-point halftime lead in the fifth-place game at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in San Diego. Junior Peyton Siva had 31 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for Franklin, which went 2-2 in the tournament.

Bianca Cooper made a free throw with two seconds left to give the 4A Vikings (8-1) the lead, then missed the second on purpose and time ran out in the championship game of the Hornet Holiday Classic at White River High. Cooper finished with a team-high 13 points. Inglemoor had trailed 46-37 with 4 minutes, 45 seconds to play in a game that had seven lead changes and seven ties. Shelby Lyman led the 2A Wildcats with 17 points, making five three-pointers, and Alyssa Smith had six points and 14 rebounds.

At Seattle Prep 55, Hazen 36

The Panthers (9-1), ranked seventh in 3A, beat the Highlanders (3-6) in a nonleague game behind 13 points apiece from Kelsey Blais and Dae'veonna Munson.

Bellevue 48, Cheney 37

At the Blackhawk Tournament in Cheney, Jenika Swanson had 13 points as the Wolverines, eighth-ranked in 3A, improved to 7-2.
