PHOENIX — Auburn Riverside will face the nation's top-ranked girls basketball team today after the Ravens won their opener Wednesday in the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions.
Katie Grad scored 22 points and sophomore Mercedes Wetmore had 15 as Riverside rallied to beat Shelbyville Central, Tenn., 57-50. The Ravens finished the game on a 12-0 run.
Riverside (4-0), ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 3A, will play Notre Dame Academy of Middleburg, Va., at 1:45 p.m. today.
"It was an amazing finish for us," said Riverside coach Adam Barrett, whose team trailed 50-45 with 3 ½ minutes remaining, with Grad and Wetmore in foul trouble with four apiece.
In the fourth quarter, Grad scored 10 points and the Ravens went 7 of 8 at the free-throw line.
Note
• O'Dea's Johri Fogerson was named State Player of the Year in football by The Associated Press. The senior running back and safety edged Prosser receiver Cody Bruns in voting by sports writers and editors.
