J.J. Clark of Eastlake High School and Allen Trillana of Kent-Meridian were honored Sunday as lineman and back of the year at the 42nd annual Scholar-Athlete Award Ceremony at Qwest Field.
Each will receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Seattle-King County chapter of the National Football Foundation.
The other finalists were Brandon James Barron of Skyline, John Gats of Bishop Blanchet, Le'Roi Edwards of Kentridge, Vincente Cordova of Evergreen, Brady Paxman of Cedarcrest and Nate Proulx of Bothell. They will receive $500 scholarships.
Two deceased coaches, Terry Ennis of Archbishop Murphy and Rollie Robbins, whose last two schools were Interlake and Seattle Prep, shared the Tony Gasparovich Memorial Coach Award.
The league coach of the year award winners were: Tom Bainter, Bothell (KingCo 4A); Steve Gervais, Skyline (KingCo 3A; school also won the state-championship award for winning state title); George Monica, Bishop Blanchet (Metro League-Mountain Division); Hoover Hopkins, Nathan Hale (Metro League-Sound Division); Terry Metcalf, Renton (Seamount); Bob Dowding, Seattle Lutheran (Sea-Tac) and John Meagher, Federal Way (South Puget Sound 4A-North).
John Hennessy, a Seattle honorary director on the board of the foundation's local chapter, received the E.R. "Rusty" Young Memorial Sponsor of the Year award.
SOCCER
Spencer Richey, a sophomore at Roosevelt High, has accepted an invitation to join the U.S. men's U-17 national team. Spencer will reside in Bradenton, Fla., and he will train with the team in preparation for the U-17 World Cup to be held in Nigeria in summer 2009. Spencer is a goalkeeper for the Crossfire U-16 Development Academy team in Redmond.
