Eastlake's girls basketball team sent a clear message to Garfield Friday night:
Beware the 2-3 zone defense.
The Wolves escaped with a KingCo 4A win over the Bulldogs, 67-61, by capitalizing on a 15-0 run to start the second half and junior Ellie Martinez's 22 points.
"We were getting beat," Eastlake coach Scott Sartorius said of his team's first half. "We were flat. Honestly, I thought we were fortunate to be in a tight game still."
The Wolves (3-1 overall, 2-0 league) emerged from halftime with a 26-24 lead and an adjusted defensive scheme, and Garfield (0-3, 0-2) failed to recover.
"That was basically the ballgame right there," first-year Bulldogs coach Craig Jackson said. "They came out and made their adjustments. We tried to make our adjustments, but inexperience showed up for us in a big way."
Garfield, which starts one senior, came back with a 30-point fourth quarter, led by Alyse Harris 13 points, but couldn't narrow the deficit by more than six points. Harris finished with 17 points.
Martinez scored 13 in an evenly matched first half and added seven more in the third. Junior guard Jena Boyle added 14 for the Wolves.
"I was just pretty determined because I know how good Garfield is," Martinez said.

At Inglemoor 68, Lake Washington 60
Nevada signee Mark McLaughlin scored 30 points in his season debut for the No. 6 Vikings (1-1, 1-0), who needed a fourth-quarter rally to beat Lake Washington. The Kangs (1-4, 1-1) led by four entering the final quarter. Will Bush added 24 points for Inglemoor, which plays fifth-ranked Decatur at 7 p.m. at Bellevue CC today in the Les Schwab Hoop Challenge. Greyson Blue led the Kangs with 20.
At Garfield 80, Eastlake 57
Tony Wroten, a 6-5 freshman guard, scored 25 and junior teammate DeAndre Taylor added 22 as the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-1) got their first win.
"We just played as a team, and if we play as a team we can beat anybody," said Wroten, who scored 29 against Franklin Tuesday and is averaging 21.7 in three varsity games. "Defense turns into offense. We forced a lot of turnovers on defense, and we got some fast break points."
Sophomore guard Michael Russo scored 17 for the Wolves (1-3, 0-2).
At Roosevelt 50, Redmond 47
Glen Dean hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining and later added two free throws to complete a comeback victory by the Roughriders (2-0, 2-0).
