Saturday's Les Schwab Hoop Challenge at Bellevue Community College won't lack star power.
The eight-game event features nationally ranked boys basketball standouts Peyton Siva of Franklin and Tony Wroten of Garfield, as well as 12 state-ranked teams.
Siva is the fifth-ranked junior point guard in the nation according to the recruiting web site, Scout.com. Wroten, a 6-foot-5 freshman who scored 29 points against Franklin in his varsity debut Tuesday, is rated by some as the nation's top player in his class.
Nevada-bound Mark McLaughlin of Inglemoor, Decatur guard Marcus Tibbs and Kentridge forward Renado Parker are among other top boy players. Kristi Kingma, who has signed with the University of Washington, leads Jackson's girls.
The marquee matchup might be the 5 p.m. boys game between Franklin, ranked second in Class 4A, and Rainier Beach, ranked No. 1 in 3A.
Defending boys state champions O'Dea (3A) and Brewster (1A), and state runner-up Kentridge (4A) are in the field.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for juniors and students.
Inglemoor short-handed
Inglemoor has started the boys basketball season without starting forwards McLaughlin and Todd Campbell.
McLaughlin, who averaged 21.6 points last season, is day to day with a sore hand. Campbell, Inglemoor's starting quarterback at the beginning of the football season, still hasn't recovered from a broken collarbone suffered in a Sept. 7 game.
The Vikings lost 63-52 to Edmonds-Woodway in their basketball opener and play Lake Washington tonight at 8.
Road to Bethlehem
One Northwest basketball product has recruited another to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
Jordan Hamilton, 6-5 wing for Seattle Prep, was recruited by Lehigh assistant Matt Logie. Logie played at Mercer Island and every prep basketball fan in the state knows of Logie's famous grandfather, Mercer Island boys coach Ed Pepple.
Logie is the No. 8 scorer in Lehigh history. His final collegiate season was 2002-03. He holds the Patriot League record for free-throw percentage at .907.
Note
• O'Dea's Johri Fogerson, who committed to play football for Washington on Thursday, will be eligible to play his first basketball game tonight at home against West Seattle. Fogerson is the son of legendary Garfield basketball player Chris Fogerson.
• Tabitha Tomlinson, a senior at Puyallup, will sign a letter of intent Saturday to play women's basketball at Montana Tech.
